2 Nights

The site has 10 numbered pitches, half are well spaced grass and half are less well spaced hard standing. We were required to phone in advance to obtain our pitch number. The large square site is surrounded on 2 sides by high conifers and on 2 sides by the high popular trees seen in the photos which along with a barn filled high with straw bales and a large trailer restricts visibility of the surrounding countryside. The photos suggest a pronounced slope to the site which is not the case. TV reception is reported as 'fair' but we found it good with our omnidirectional aerial. The reported ‘information room’ is a small basket adjacent to the shower with a handful of leaflets in it. The only local leaflet was a map of walks around Helion Bumstead produced by the parish council which was a blow up of the 1:25k OS map. There appeared to be 4 village pubs within an hour’s walk but only the Fox & Hounds at Steeple Bumpstead (45 mins) was open for lunch. The closest pub in Hellion Bumpstead is a community pub with limited opening. Steeple Bumpstead is much larger and has a Jet petrol station that doubles up as a convenience store and post office. We took our motorhome to the Tesco supermarket in the town of Haverhill. Had we stayed longer we might have caught the bus from Hellion Bumpstead to Haverhill in one direction or Saffron Waldon in the other. Bus times are shown at the bus stops in Hellion Bumpstead. We only stayed two nights but the impression we gained is that if we had stayed longer we would have run out of things to do without driving somewhere. During the day there was some farmyard (incl. pig) and aircraft noise but it didn't trouble us on what we considered to be a quiet site. Slate Hall farm includes caravan and motorhome storage.

Great Stay

Stayed here for one evening and had a fantastic time. Communication was excellent and the site has great views over fields especially on pitches 1&2. It is a working pig farm but this was no bother all. The owners even kindly let us stay till later in the afternoon on departure. We shall return 😀

Lovely clean site with good facilities and warm welcome

We were pleasantly surprised when we stayed for 3 nights last week. A friendly welcome and clean toilet and shower (which costs 50p but have reasonable amount of time). As a working farm we did expect some noise and were slightly concerned over a previous review regarding smell, however we didnt encounter any smell or other major issues and would stay here again. Large well kept field with tree coverage on perimeter, well spaced out pitch. Thanks

This is a working farm!!!

We have recently spent a few nights at this site. The welcome was friendly and the couple were very helpful. The site is flat and grass cut and collected, and the caravans well spaced out. It is a working farm and the farmer started work at 5.30 every morning we were there using, machinery that woke us up. The caravans are not far from the sheds and barn and that is where he seemed to be. Also for all we could see sheep in the field near the caravan but most days all we could smell was pigs. The smell didn't seem to stop some people sitting out, but we found it overpowering. I know it is a farm, and farms have smells, and have learnt that next time we stay on a farm we will find out what type.

Truly wonderful stay

The site is so much more than expected, we were truly amazed at the amount of space each pitch is allocated and the pitches are surrounded by open fields with fabulous views, even though it was raining, not long after we arrived Susan (owners daughter in law) came with Brolly in hand to give us a warm welcome, it was a short visit and we’re off home soon but you can bet we’ll be back, thank you Slate Hall for helping two very worn out key workers relax, hoping it’s not long till we meet again

Just Brilliant

Fabulous site, even when the shower block and toilet isn't available. Beautiful views from all over the site, and so quiet and peaceful. Owners friendly and helpful - can't offer high enough praise!!

Beautiful outlook

Having just returned from our second stay at Slate Hall, we would definitely go back for a third visit, and more! It’s only 30mins from home for us so a great mini getaway for a weekend. The site is very easy to access with friendly and helpful owners. Once at the site you can just pitch up and walk for miles and miles. On the first visit we didn’t leave the site at all! The views from the site of the countryside are great with beautiful sunsets. There is so much space between each pitch it wasn’t at all cramped like some CL sites. Can’t comment on the toilet/showers as they were closed due to covid but this wasn’t a problem for us as we were self contained.

Just as a CL should be

This is just as a CL should be in our view - surrounded by farm land so very rural, very spacious, quiet (aircraft noise mentioned elsewhere not a problem) and well-run by a lovely lady. The site also benefits from a tap on each pitch, along with mains hook-up of course. The separate toilet and shower for the CL (we didn't use the latter) was clean and tidy when we were there. This site represents very good value for what it offers. We so enjoyed our stay there in August we will be returning in a couple of weeks' time.

HOSTS WHO GO THAT EXTRA MILE

In our experience, those who host CLs are often ‘involved’ and customer facing or, you are lucky if you see them at all. Whilst this many not necessarily reflect the quality of the site many reading this review will identify this scenario. We are pleased to report that our charming hosts at Slate Hall, Mike and Rosina, are in the first category. This is a very good site; spacious, mostly flat, away from the (relatively quiet) road, surrounded by mature trees, yet letting in the sunshine. Toilet and shower (latter not used by us) are well kept and everything else is as it should be. This was not our first stay here, which itself supports our view that we were more than satisfied with everything. We enjoy going to new places and it is not often we return to a site, especially not one some distance from our home in Devon. Returning to my opening comment; we had a problem (with our car) whilst here. On a day we were meeting up with old friends in Cambridge, with limited contingency time, we found our car battery flat (our own fault). Not being ‘vulnerable’ customers, or in a situation of any danger, we knew it would be a long wait for our breakdown service to reach us. No sooner had I explained to Rosina, she phoned Mike who was busy with other things out and about on the farm. With a response that would give credit to the emergency services he returned forthwith, located his portable charger, and promptly got us started. What an absolute pair of stars Mike and Rosina are. Not only was this way above and beyond their obligations; this was performed with a cheery attitude and a smile, and, very quickly. We were in good time to meet with our friends and the battery has been going well since. Thank you Mike and Rosina, we’ll see you again sometime!

Lovely weekend

Slate Hall is a lovely little CL site. The caravans are nicely spaced out on the field and there is EHU and water direct to the caravan. The views are to open countryside and the field is flat and mown. There is a shower and toilet that are both clean. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The village of Helions Bumpstead is picturesque but there is no local shop and the pub didn't look great. There are two pubs 3 miles away in Steeple Bumpstead that serve great food. We would definitely visit here again.
