Excellent site

We have just returned from a memorable week here. The site is quiet and plenty of space between the vans. The scenery is beautiful and there are plenty of peaceful walks from or near the site. We found the regular bus service from the end of the lane excellent. One way takes you into Keswick and terminates by a Booths supermarket, the other way gives access to Grasmere, Ambleside and even as far as Kendal and Lancaster. Saves a fortune on parking fees and much more relaxing than trying to find parking space!

Don't set your satnav to the postcode for Shoulthwaite farm

Every good said about this CL is fully endorsed .. but do follow the instructions in the site details .. the postcode takes you to a point 0.75 miles north, in the hills, on roads that are barely single track ..

Raw beauty

Ditto to previous reviews. Lovely location, listening to the roaring brook and baaing lambs. Our dogs loved the walk straight out the van onto the footpath through the woods to the fell. Appreciated the hard standing, so can visit whatever the weather. Definitely be returning.

Stunningly beautiful CL

Beautiful CL surrounded by fells and forest. All pitches have basic shale hardstandings and access from the main road is easy and far enough away for noise not to be a problem. The site is on a working sheep farm with a beck running behind a perimeter wall on one side and farm outbuildings flank the top end where there is a public footpath through the forest and up into the fells. The owners are lovely people who still work hard on the farm despite being in their mid eighties. The views from the site are stunning and the site is well situated for Keswick, Grasmere and Ambleside and central, northern and eastern fells and lakes. A real plus for us was the birds directly outside the caravan window on the bird feeders. Chaffinches, blue tits, great tits, coal tits, nuthatch, siskins, tree creeper, greater spotted woodpecker and a daily visits from a red squirrel to inspect his board of nuts. We like this sort of CL, it ticks all the boxes for us, no frills yet stunning. We have been visiting the lakes for over 40 years, but having now forsaken canvas for a touring caravan (due to advancing years) this was our first visit in our van and it certainly will not be our last to Shou!thwaite. Our thanks to the Harrison family for making us so welcome and taking the time to chat to us, despite having to work very hard with early lambing in very difficult weather conditions. The Shoulthwaite weather forecasting string was absolutely soaking at times!!!! For those who have not seen this tongue in cheek cumbrian farmer's sense of humour look on the barn door.

Great Site For Winter In Lovely Location.

We used this site March 2017 to meet up with family, they in their caravan, us in our motorhome. Being winter, we needed hard standing the electric hook-ups were luxury for us, we don't usually bother. This site fitted the bill although I was concerned with the proximity to the A591 and traffic noise. As it happened, it rained all of our time here so we were indoors and didn't really hear traffic noise! The site has seven pitches, (for some reason) that are well spaced out and most have room for an extra vehicle. A beck flows alongside one side of the site with a small fall behind the top of the site. By the time we left, this was a foaming white mass, roaring down the slope but never encroached onto the site, even though Keswick had a flood warning out! We had to walk up to the farm to pay (which was no problem) and also bought fresh farm eggs. There are footpaths round and about and one goes right through the site and up to Raven Crag, which I didn't quite make in the torrential rain. I did spot a deer and a fox crossed right in front of me. Keswick is only 3 miles away and Thirlmere and Derwent Water very close.Close to Helvellyn and other peaks so an ideal site for the enthusiastic walker. As for us, apart from me having a couple of walks from site, we didn't feel the urge to leave site, owing to the weather. We simply enjoyed the murky, misty views from the vans! Considering the location of this site (incidentally, the oldest CL on the network) it's nice to realise the owners are not greedy and the overnight fee remains at £11 in 2017.

Value for money site

Stayed here for 10 nights in July 2016. The site is situated a little bit back from the main road and we didn't hear the traffic at all as the road bends away from the farm. Entrance from the main road s easy but care must be taken when going over the small bridge that takes you over the Ghyll as it's a bit tight but manageable for all sizes. There is some noise from the Ghyll that runs behind the CL but this is a constant and surprisingly didn't disturb us even though we were pitched just the other side of the wall from it. There are 7 pitches in an area that slopes upwards in accordance with the natural contour of the hill that it sits on. However the gradient is not steep and the owner has tried to ensure a flat hardstanding surface for the caravan/mh. You may find though that any awning may be on uneven ground. The CL area is shared with the farm outbuildings that house a couple of tractors and some hay, but the 84 year old owner states that he no longer starts work at the crack of dawn and we didn't find it a bother. In fact it was nice knowing that the owner or his workers would likely be around the site for security reasons. Being July there were swallows nesting in one of the buildings and bird feeders would attract birds such as Siskins and Greenfinches etc. There is a recycling system of sorts and the elsan is easily accessed. A Public Footpath does enter the CL at the lower level and exits without troubling the stayers. This means there is a dog walk from site. Public transport is via bus stops found right outside the entrance, going to Keswick (3 miles away) or towards Kendal via Grasmere the other. There are also a couple of walks you could do straight from site, one taking in St.John in the Vale directly opposite the site, which makes a pleasant view. You can also walk to Castlerigg Stone Circle from site (about 7 miles there and back.) The only problem people might have with the site is that occasionally there are more than 5 vans on site, particularly when the Keswick Religious Festival is on for 3 weeks at the end of July/early August. Not sure whether anyone could take umbrage with 2 elderly owners who have farmed here forever and have had a CL on this site since 1955. The owners are very engaging and lovely people. Eggs can be bought from the farmhouse. All in all, a super site in an excellent location for the Northern hills of the Lakes and with easy access to Lansdale via Grasmere and Ambleside.

Excellent site for visitors with dogs

We had just a four day visit in October, and only got in because they had a cancellation. Most people on the site seem to have been going for years. This site is in a perfect place for exploring the Lake District and is beautifully located. It is just of the main Keswick – Ambleside road but we noticed very little road noise. The access to the site was straightforward and there is plenty of space for turning/manoeuvring. Site facilities were straightforward and the owners were pleasant. The best feature of the site is that there are footpaths from the site into the woodlands that go up to the fell behind and on down to Thirlmere. This makes it the perfect spot for staying with dogs, its like having your own dog walk. The only down side to this site is that it isn’t a “normal” CL but has seven pitches, making it busier than we would like. If you get a choice the best pitches are at the top of the site as they have more space and better views. Would we go back? – yes.

An absolute gem.

This is one fantastic site which we have visited several times. The owners Jim and Ruth are absolute treasures. The site itself is perfect all round, wonderful views, absolutely great for walking and the icing on the cake is a good bus service, where you can access so many places. It appears it may be one of the few bus routes in the Lake District which will have no cuts. It is one of those sites where you could go back to year after year and not get fed up with as there is so much to do. We always stay for 14 nights and have a large motorhome which we do not move off the site until it is time to leave. When you have exhausted all the walks close to the site, there are so many others to do by using the bus which you catch at the end of the lane, which runs half hourly for part of the year and hourly at other times. This bus runs from Keswick all the way to Lancaster so there are many places to visit inbetween for shopping and walking etc., This is one site we will never tire of.

August 2013

Second time we visited, the owners are friendly and good to talk to. Site is basic for amenities, but very well located for walking and Keswick and Lake District attractions. For those who depend on TV, you need satellite dish, also you'll have to walk down the lane for phone signal. However, I find not having these a bonus. Hardstandings are just what is needed in the wet. We will return as this suits our needs perfectly
