So very disappointing

We spend a lot of time choosing the right CL for us and the reviews of other caravanners are part of this process. This CL has glowing reports and the bonus of having won an award. Ed, the owner, was very helpful in changing our ferry booking when we were delayed by a day. He met us when we arrived and helped with local information and maps. He also brought everyone a gift of home grown runner beans. Which was very kind of him, as was allowing us to run our dogs in his fields opposite the caravans. The pitches are fully serviced with two water taps and each pitch is terraced into one side of the site backing immediately onto a thick hedge which surrounds two sides of the site. The pitches are also level, although the awning area is rough and bumpy and quite small - caravan, awning and car is a tight fit even with a two berth 'van. There is good and free wifi. However, this is not a lawned site. It is a fairly rough, quite sloping field, albeit it is reasonably closely and regularly mown. The ground is uneven and tussocky and moles have been at work. We were rather taken aback when we drove onto the field; the site may well have looked different when first opened but to us it looked basic, scruffy and badly in need of some TLC. It wasn't quite our idea of an award winning site. There are major road works in Newport meaning that a great deal of local traffic is using Whitehouse Lane as a rat run. Thus the lane, a few metres away on the other side of the hedge, has become a very noisy main road for a good 12 hours each day. As someone on an adjoining pitch pointed out, 'I'm sure there is lovely bird song from this hedge, but the traffic is so loud I can't hear it'. The heavy traffic is likely to last for at least the rest of this year. Which was bad enough. When combined with the loud noise from the field directly behind the hedge to the rear of the pitches – which transpires to be a very large junk yard/tip, the owner of which runs a tracked digger as well as other loud machinery, it became like staying in the lorry park of a motorway service station. Ed told us he has no control over what happens in this yard, the noise from which, on one day, ran from 8.45am to past midnight, starting again at 8.30am the following morning. After five days we had had enough but were extremely fortunate to find another CL that had just had a cancellation and so, in the middle of pouring rain and for the very first time in all our years of caravanning, we packed up and fled. Although initially Ed had been sympathetic, we felt we left under a cloud and it was all very unhappy and uncomfortable. I have no idea why description and reality don't seem to match but in all conscience I simply cannot recommend this site. It's always sad to leave a less than glowing review and I accept that other people may disagree with me, but an award winning site? I'm afraid I don't get that.

Comment from the Club

The CL Owner has been in touch to address your concerns as they work so hard to make sure their site is well maintained and that their guests have the best possible experience when staying with them.

The CL Owner wants to clear up any misunderstanding and address your concerns. Please be assured his neighbour is not a scrap yard. On one occasion during your stay the neighbour had over-enthusiastically worked late into the night and kept people awake. The CL owner spoke to him and he agreed to stop when asked and also apologised. When the CL owner informed you of this he also offered you a refund.

It is worth noting when staying in rural areas that farmers may work late into the night with tractors, bringing in harvests. Farms are centres of activity and as such there can be associated noises.

Grass pitches can be vulnerable to the weather and other factors. Maintenance is carried out every year to the grass pitches to repair damages caused by hot weather, heavy vehicles and impermeable awning mats. This year the virus and associated lockdown played a role in blocking supplies of fertilisers and grass seed.

With regards to the roadworks, these are completely out of the CL Owners hands and are due to be completed by the end of the year.

We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay at this lovely site but please be assured the CL Owner works very hard and has received wonderful recent feedback from members who have found their stay to be peaceful, with a number of reviews being featured on their Facebook Page which you can see here: https://www.facebook.com/RodgebrookFarm/?ref=page_internal

Gem of a site

We stayed for just over 2 weeks on this site. 5 level grass pitches each with it's own tap and waste water so no aqua roll to fill. Well stocked little shed where you can swap books - we took 3 books and left 7 in the shed for fellow caravanners. Wifi available (a little slow but good enough) A welcome bag of fresh grown veggies was given to us on arrival (sweetcorn, tomatoes and runner beans) all delicious. Ed is a lovely man, helpful, informative and although not intrusive, he is there when you need him. The site is ideally located being approx 30 mins to East Cowes ferry. Newport (capital of IOW) is only 10mins drive with Lidl, Sainsburys, Asda, Morrisons etc available for grocery shopping. Most places on the island are within a half hour drive. Osborne House and St Mildred's church 15mins. Carisbrooke Castle within 10 mins. We had a lovely holiday and were glad we chose Rodgebrook farm.

Fantastic Site

Ed and Carole are certainly great hosts and have put a lot of hardwork into the CL. This was our first visit to the Island and what a great place to spend it too!! Ed booked the ferry for us nothing was too much trouble, we received a very informative booklet in the post, which was so helpful!! A great warm welcome on arrival from both Ed and Carole and once settled Carole brought a vase of sweetpeas (they smelt amazing) and Ed brought us one of his home grown cucumbers (the best we have tasted for a longtime). Great CL with plenty of space, a massive bonus with all pitches being fully serviced and having WIFI, within a 10 mile drive you can get to most points of the Island so very central indeed. We were invited to a CL get together with Ed, Carole & John (Son) and other fellow club members, this was a great night and lots of laugh where had by all . Sadly this was our last night before sailing back to main land, but for us a perfect end to what had been a fab holiday and a very memorable one too!! Would like to keep this site to ourselves but these lovely people deserve to be busy!!! Many thanks Ed & Carole for all of your help enjoyed our stay with you and shall be back to see you again soon. Wonderful Utopia.

Edd and Carol are naturals for this CL lark, they made our stay really nice with some of there friendly and helpful advice etc. We were invited to a campsite get together where we met the other caravanners and a right good time was had by all. We didnt have to go but Kath (my wife) and Icertainly enjoyed the friendly atmosphere. This CL is a 'cut above' a must visit for all. Thanks you both very much Bob & Kath B.

First time on the island sines i was a kid

The sight is on a slight slope but the pitches have bean dug out to make them level you have your own tap for drinking water plus a tap to rinse of pots etc. Very worm welcome the only thing i would suggest that a mirror is put in place to help you see the traffic coming from the right hand side when leaving the site. unfortunate for us the whether was rain rain rain even had a tornado on the island but even though we had all that rail the field never got soggy it is well drained. The shops and local amenities only a short drive away and the fuel prises lowest in the country at the time of our stay if no when i visit the island again i would certainly consider to use this sight but i do like to use different sights but all in all this sight was a very well kept and clean site if only we had a bit more sun shine but we had a lovely holiday

Outstanding Holiday

This was our first holiday to the Isle of Wight with our touring caravan and we wanted a CL site that would be ideal for site-seeing and walking. This CL did not disappoint us and Carole and Ed were so helpful. You will see when you visit why they won the award in 2018. We had a wonderful holiday and would recommend this site to anybody going to the Isle of Wight.

summer 2018

Spent a great 10 days last summer in the hot weather.. Everything you would wish for on a CL, great hosts and a warm welcome with fresh vegetables available and free wi-fi. good TV and easy access to site. Anywhere on the island within reasonable distance. Only gripe, pitches are a bit cramped but plenty of space in field. Caravan Hereford

A lovely spot with great facilities

This was a great find thanks to the contributions of other reviewers. The site is great. Every pitch is levelled, has its own water services and electricity and the wifi is excellent. The welcome from Ed was just as others have described it and his booking with Red Funnel saved us a considerable amount of money. There is plenty to see in the area and if we return to the Isle of Wight we will check availability at Rodgebrook Farm first. A wonderful five days.

We will be back

Our friends have recently moved to the IOW- we booked this site based on reviews- they were not wrong! Fabulous site, Carole & Ed made us so welcome & produced a basket of home grown produce for our supper. They were around if we needed anything- but were not intrusive. Their request to provide any ideas to improve site were genuine & acted upon. As a part time wheelchair user access to beaches was crucial; Ed put up a laminated information sheet. The information hut had the usual leaflets etc as well as emergency supplies of toilet rolls, solar lights & board games & books for wet weather. There was an A-Z which we borrowed & was useful. The pitches were laid to grass & terraced with mesh under- even during a severe storm water drained away very well. Our dogs enjoyed the walks close by & I was impressed by the recycling facilities. Very central to many tourist attractions & one gem was Blueberrys cafe which we would not have found if it was not for the remarks book & menu pinned up on the board. The wifi was brilliant & did not drop out at all- I managed to watch BBCiplayer with no problems- we didn’t have time to watch TV but am sure the signal was find as other guests were watching TV We will certainly stay here again & would have no hesitation in recommending this site to others- the ferry booking service was very helpful & associated discount allowed another pub meal. Thank you Carole & Ed the very positive reviews you have received are truly justified.
