This is a really lovely, well cared for site. A friendly welcome on the phone when booking. Owners were very genuine, friendly and laid back. Just what I want out of a CL.
My first impression on arrival was that this site is someone's "pride and joy".Very well organised. very neat and clean. Well laid out, private pitches next to a river. I loved the quirky "home made" shower & toilet facilities, which were custom built and in 6x4' sheds. Very comfortable and warm facitilities, despite it being February when I visited. Payment is by an envelope system, which suited me as I got there late and needed to be away early in the morning.
This site is in a remote and peaceful area of West Cumbria. Be warned that there is not really any phone signal. And although there is wifi, the speed is abut 1/100th of what you might be used to in an urban area. Not the owners fault but to be expected of a remote area I think. Overall it contributed to me having a nice rest! :)
Overall I loved it and wouldn't hesitate to go back :)
Excellent cl
First time here for 3 nights over last weekend. Superb site all round. Very well managed site down to last details. Love the toilets and showers ...Very creative use of 6 x 4 sheds! Many thanks
Simply the best!
Having stayed at The Riverside on numerous occasions, we, like many others, return time and time again.
The site is in one of the most picturesque areas of the country and is perfectly placed to explore the Northern Fells.
The owners, John and Dawn Bell, were worthy winners of the Northern England Regional CL of the year in 2012 and they certainly get our vote every time.
If you enjoy peace and quiet, combined with an excellent, well run site, then this is the place for you.
The Cumbrian Tranquil Gem
We have just returned home from another refreshing stay at Riverside. As ever, the site is immaculately maintained. Yes, currently there is not yet a credible phone signal on the site, but dispite the previous reviewers remarks, we could not fault the WiFi, with it's easy access. We used the WiFi a great deal for searching Cumbria's points of interest, what’s-on, emails and the site's website, which is packed with helpful local information. Thanks John & Dawn. See you in October.

Annual Holiday
Our main reason for picking this site was that is was adults only, had a shower and toilet etc and location, and I have to say it filled all of these requirements with full marks. Great location and base for exploring the Lake District, facilities are great, different but ideal and all that you need, my only grip is while they advertise wi-fi and only ask for a nominal amount it does not work and as they state mobiles do not work so you are limited if you need contact with the outside world, which you could argue you don't as on holiday, would we go back ? with out a doubt great site
Peace and quiet.
Spent 4 nights at riverside, good sized pitch facing the river. Plenty of wildlife on view including a heron which fished the river. Facilities quirky but warm and clean, shower excellent after a hard days walking.

A great site for The Lakes
This site is in a quiet part of the Lakes but is close enough to M6 to open up the whole area. For example in the few days we were there, we went to Carlisle, Silloth, Maryport, Penrith, Keswick and Cockermouth all within a short distance/time from the site. Locally there's not a huge range of amenities but if the local village hall has a Sunday breakfast fund raiser make sure you go! The nearest pub is at Hasket Newmarket which is easily walked in about 30 minutes or less, the next main village is Caldbeck which has a Spar type general dealers, coffee shops and a pub and can be the base for several walks.
Site toilets and showers are "uniquely quaint" but are clean and warm, the owners are friendly and helpful and we will be back.
The Christmas and New Year 2014
What a lovely very quiet spot. The CL is well maintained and the pitching arrangements are good though larger units may find manoeuvring especially when leaving a bit tight if the site is full. We had to back into another pitch to turn out of the site. Fortunately the pitch was empty as I am not sure what we would have done had this not been the case with our twin axle. The owner was friendly and the wifi functional but slow as you would expect in a rural area. Road walk of 1.5 miles to Hesket Newmarket for the excellent pub is well worth it. Whilst the weather was pretty awful with heavy rain and high winds on several days the site is relatively well sheltered and the river though high managed to stay off the site. Overall, I would recommend the site but large units be careful which pitch you pick and think of how you will get out again. The Mill Race may suit such units better. Oh and by the way despite some negative comments re the toilet and shower facilities we found them clean, warm and perfectly functional.
A peaceful retreat
Our first visit to Riverside and hopefully not our last. Very quiet and peaceful with an owner who was friendly and pleasant but not obtrusive. Weather during our stay was excellent for mid September which definitely helped! Good local walks but car required to visit the high fells. Our only point of concern is that the site has 2 areas - the CL and a small separate touring area for anyone - the Millrace. These sites are not treated as 2 separate entities and on a few occasions we were unable to use the facilities on the CL as people staying on the Millrace came on to the CL to use them. Also all traffic using the Millrace had to go through the CL which caused a bit more noise at times. This did not cause any major problems but it was difficult to see the advantages of being a CC member - we would have preferred to stay on a separate CL with exclusive use of its own facilities. However, these comments should not detract from the fact that this was one of the most peaceful sites we have ever stayed on and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
A perfect retreat
We have stayed at the Riverside on many occasions and it is by far, our favourite place to stay.
You could not wish to meet a nicer couple than the owners, John and Dawn Bell and site is an absolute credit to them. You would be hard pressed to find a more picturesque, peaceful and well maintained site than this. We would recommend anyone who enjoys peace and quiet in one of the most beautiful parts of the country, to stay here without hesitation.
We were absolutely bewildered when we read the review submitted by MAJESTIC125 and can hardly believe they couldn’t find a suitable walk near the site without driving miles down the road?! Perhaps it would have been prudent to invest in an Ordnance Survey Map (the OL5 is ideal) which would have shown them numerous walks, well within walking distance of the site, where they would have enjoyed spectacular scenery, picturesque villages and an abundance of wildlife.
As for the comments made about the toilet and shower facilities, we have found them to be more than adequate and are always warm, cosy and spotlessly clean. Unlike some other sites, you don’t have to pay extra to use the shower (which is excellent) and it’s much better than lugging water about. If they found them so disagreeable, why didn’t they use their own, on board facilities?
The fact there is little or no mobile signal is not unique to this site, in fact you will find that many areas in the Lakes are affected and that’s fine by us, as it means there is no-one to bother us! This is easily rectified if you walk up the lane and there is also a payphone in the village. We’ve never had any problems with the WIFI which is provided for a very reasonable cost, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world as we know it if we couldn’t get connected.
John and Dawn were worthy winners of the North Regional CL of The Year in 2012 and they certainly get our vote every time. We would suggest that you try this site for yourselves and take the totally unjustified review by MAJESTIC125 with a pinch of salt. The fact that they have decided not to return is their loss.
