Wildlife, stunning views and affordable.

I’ve just finished 3 nights at this CL. I could easily have spent all my time sitting looking at the scenery but I did make the most of local activities too. The walk down the hill leads to a beautiful river with easy footpaths to follow in either direction. It’s about a mile to the river with most of that being downhill, it does mean it’s a mile back up hill to the site but there are opportunities to take a break for those of us who are less fit. The wildlife in the area kept me occupied in the evenings with various birds of prey as well as deer passing through. The highlight had to be the barn owl I watched for 20 minutes as it hunted in the long grass of the field right next to my van. The site is about 20 minutes from Salcombe where North Sands provides a dog friendly beach year round. Unfortunately it was closed for filming when I visited but it meant I ended up at Bolberry Down which provided a stunning cliff top walk along part of the coastal path. It’s a national trust site so free for members or £3 to park all day. The site itself is extremely well maintained, the grass is kept short in the main area for campers but is currently left longer in the rest of the field, a path is mowed to the gate in to the avenue that takes you to the river. The top 3 pitches are fairly level (one is currently hard standing), the 2 other pitches are less level and you will need ramps for them. There is a road that runs next to the site. It is fairly busy in the day but quietens down in to the evening. I’m quite sensitive to road noise but this didn’t bother me. There are two water points, one by the elsan and bins the second in the corner at the other end of the pitches. The elsan point is immaculate and raised so much easier to use than a basic hole in the ground. The bins were tidy and allowed for splitting up recycling. There is also a drive over grey waste point in the entrance for motorhomes. I met one of the owners who came down to check everything was ok. We had a good chat and discussed their hopes for the land with plans to extend the hard standing among other things. To me this site is a good balance of relaxed but organised. The pitches are clearly marked and the facilities, although basic, have little extras that make them convenient to use. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting a very relaxed time away with stunning scenery and for £10 a night you really can’t go wrong.
