Wonderful CL

We have just returned from three nights at this wonderful site.  Peaceful and extremely relaxing.  Excellent walking directly from the site onto the beautiful Lathkill Dale.  We found the owners extremely friendly and they keep the site immaculate.  We will definitely be back.

Perfect site

I don't want to tell you how good this site is because it will make you book..which will mean less options for me to go. I love everything about the site the facilities are just what you need. Site is very well maintained and the owners are lovely, helpful but not intrusive. Very relaxing with excellent walking right from site. As I said though no need to book ;)

Peaceful and Great for Walks

The location is very peaceful, being well away from any main roads. There are 5 clearly defined and numbered pitches each served by a EHU. The grass is well cut and everything is well kept and managed without being over done. Ideally suited to couples and those who enjoy walking; there are a number of nice walks directly off site into Lathkill Dale and the walk along the river to Haddon Grove is rewarded by a visit to the Lathkill Hotel where the beer garden has amazing views. A little noise could be heard in the evening from the commercial site nearby but nothing particularly intrusive. We stayed on pitch 5 (near the telegraph pole) which I think has the best position - sun on the sitting out side of the caravan long into the evening. What's bad? The access into the CL field from the farm drive is quite a tight right hand turn and many units will not do it in one. There is, however ample room to draw past it, reverse a little to get the angle and all fine. On leaving, same solution and no problems, just don't try to do it in one with a long unit (ours is 24ft). The owners keep themselves pretty much to themselves and issue a phone number should there be an issue. Payment is via an honesty box on the WC. I found this to be a perfectly acceptable arrangement. We had a great stay, although on our final night a 6th unit came on and parked next to us. I don't know if he booked in advance (I suspect so as advance booking clearly marked in handbook and on website). Other than that it is a great CL for peace, quiet and walks.

Avery rude and unfriendly welcome

Upon arrival at Mill Farm we arrived at the security gate and rang the bell. After a while a youth appeared and informed us that the owners were away. I introduced myself and ask if we could enter the CL field and site ourselves, yes said OK. Upon entering the field we found pitches 1& 4 occupied and also another caravan was site between pitches 3 & 4 this left pitch no5 vacant. Pitch no5 was a hard standing pitch, it also had a telegraph-pole/electric supply cable and was backed by high trees and it also had the main site water supply point on it. There was two electric points, one to pitch no5 and the other pointing to a grassed area adjacent to pitch 5. We took this to be a spare pitch, so we chose to park our caravan on it. The weather that day, had been described by the BBC weather people as the hottest day of the year. Also, we had purchased a new awning, but as we had never put this up before had problems sorting everything out and as a result it took us and hour and half to put it up and site our outfit. Prior to our visit my wife had been quite poorly and what with the weather and my frustration we were very glad as we finished doing everything. Just as I was putting in the last peg the site gat opened and in drove another caravan. As we were the forth caravan on site I presumed that this was the last caravan to arrive. As the outfit drove in, the lady passenger got out and closed the gate as the outfit drove in. I called out to her a,” cheery Hell,” but got no reply. I thought that she had not heard me, so I called out again, and again got no reply. Then the driver of the outfit walked over to us and told me that he was the owner and said that we must take everything up and move the 16 feet to our right onto pitch no5. I was taken aback by his petty and pedantic attitude. What significant difference would this 16 feet make? Prior to booking any CL site we very carefully choose sites that advertise grass, as we are old-time caravaners who prefer to site our caravan and awning on grass, as we do not like hard standings. In fact this CL is advertised within the members booklet as grassed and does not mention that members must only use the hard standings My wife and I are pensioners and have visited hundreds of caravan sites but have never been treated in such a rude and unfriendly way. If Mr. & Mrs. Marsden require visitor to park their units in a certain position they should have posted these instructions on the site. I was not going to go through another two hours or so taking my awning down , pegs out water moved and the putting every thing back again, so we decided to leave. I WOULD ADVISE ANY MEMBER NOT TO VISIT THIS CL UNLESS THEY WANT TO BE REGIMENTED AND ORDERED ABOUT. al at Mill Farm we arrived at the security gate and rang the bell. After a while a youth appeared and informed us that the owners were away. I introduced myself and ask if we could enter the CL field and site ourselves, yes said OK. Upon enteri

Haven of Peace

Just enjoyed 5 nights here for the first time we where impressed by the upkeep of the site and surrounding areas lovely peacefull area great access for oudoor activities, although can be some early evening noise from adjacent site that seems to attract school groups doing D of E awards etc not a huge problem though. As previous posts have stated would have been nice to put a face to the site owners just to say hello did feel a bit of a pain having primary communication at the end of a phone.Oh and dont forget your own loo roll ran out and not replaced for three days during our stay .As for the entrance/exit our van is single axle 6.7M long and found no problems although can see longer twin axle units struggle entering saying that a huge American style RV turned up one day and coped admirably.

A lovely site and lovely owners

I am not sure I should be writing this as I really want this site to be my little secret! We have stayed there at Easter for a couple of years and each time we have stayed, we have been welcomed by the friendly owners. Care does need to be taken when accessing the site field and exiting with a caravan, but this can be negotiated with care. It is a beautiful location and there are walks from the site to the nearby village and dale. The field is large and is well-maintained. You are left to your own devices but the owners are on hand if needed. A real find and a credit as a CL. Infact, I tend to base other visits to other CLs on the standard set by this one.

Rainy weekend

A well kept site with what looked like three hardstanding and two grass pitches. We arrived in the dark and couldn't work out where our pitch was. Fortunately the owner came and pointed out the pitch which we set up on (pitch 5 under the telegraph pole). This was the only time we saw the owner(s) all weekend. To be perfectly honest we felt more of a hinderence than a visitor mainly because of the posters everywhere stating "that you are not to go to the house or cottage. If you have problems ring this number and leave your money in the honesty box". I don't want to be best friends with any of the CL owners but I would like to see who I am paying my money too and not leaving it in a box to be collected sometime by someone. It rained most of the weekend so we were pleased to be on hardstanding. We just spent a quiet weekend away relaxing. The tv reception is poor but we did manage to get all the main chanels. Lots of walking to do around the area and plenty of places to visit.

Beautiful and quiet location. Mind when exiting!

This is a beautiful location, and quiet, in an obviously popular area, as there are several other camping and caravan sites in the locality. The site felt it should be aimed at couples as the additional costs for children/ extra adults, start to put it into club site money. The views are stunning and worth the fees alone and the owners friendly. You do need to take care, especially leaving the pitches into the drive, as it is a tight turn, and longer 'vans may struggle if not " lined up properly"? Dispite this, we will definitely be booking again. Thanks for the stay

Route

I stayed on this CL for a few days in early September.Perfectly located for walking and exploring the surrounding countryside. Great views and the facilities are as described, this is a CL I would recommend with a good choice a pubs serving food within a few miles. Care has to be taken on arrival but the biggest problem was using the route planner associated with the caravan club Web pages. The route given from my home address via Bakewell was dangerous. I was directed for absolutely no reason through two exceptionally narrow and steep side roads.I recognise that the planner does have warnings attached, but then why offer it for members use?. Once on these roads you are comitted and to repeat it was completely and utterly unsuitable for caravans and even for any largish car!!. Use the directions given by the CL owners.
