Lovely little site

I telephoned Vera to make a booking. Having left a message on her answer phone she rang me back later the same day. I in turn had to ring her back as I was out strawberry picking at the time. Anyway, we managed to get booked in at short notice. Vera advised that, if it was wet on our arrival, we were best to drive in as close to the dyke as possible, but fortunately it was nice and dry. However, just as we were choosing where to pitch up the rain started. It didn't amount to much, but was just enough for us to have to get our mats out to stop the wheels spinning on the grass when we mounted the blocks. The field is very uneven, especially where we pitched as there was a dip - but fortunately our blocks levelled us nicely. We opted to chill after our arrival. We could have ventured to watch the cricket at Thaxted Cricket Club in the adjoining field but it was just as relaxing sitting in the sun listening to the leather on willow. We use our bikes to get around when we stay at CLs and on day one we cycled to the lovely market town of Saffron Walden, which was hosting a music festival on the Sunday. We hung around for a couple of hours before getting back on our bikes to continue our ride - which took us through some lovely villages including the very pretty village of Finchingfield - a 33 mile route. The following day we again got on our bikes and we cycled another loop of the lovely Essex countryside, covering just over 25 miles. We met Vera later that afternoon. She's a very friendly, chatty lady. As we were the only outfit remaining on the site on the Monday she told us we could leave when we wanted to on the Tuesday - but we had onward travel arrangements so we did a leisurely pack up on the Tuesday, and were gone by 11. As for the reviews remarking about the site being on the flight path from Stansted, we barely noticed the planes when we stayed. We couldn't understand the negative feedback in that respect. The site is also just off a minor road, which at times could be busy (people commuting to/from work), but other than that it was fine. We would definitely look to stay again. Vera's site is very well cared for and very reasonably priced. So many CLs are choosing to up their prices these days and unfortunately, unless needs must, they will not be on our radar.

A great peaceful time.

We stayed for 2 nights on Friday 7th June 2024, and Saturday 8th June 2024. On arrival we were able to choose our own pitch which was very spacious, with easy access to EHU, water, recycling and chemical waste disposal. Via a gate directly from the pitches there is a footpath which takes you across the fields and into Thaxted, approximately 30 mins walk, very dog friendly. Thaxted is a beautiful small town with timber framed buildings, and an 18th century windmill, and a magnificent medieval church, a couple of pubs, bakery shop, fish n chip shop and restaurant. It's like stepping back in time. Overall we had a great time and have already booked to visit again. Thanks... Rob & Amanda.

Very well kept site, attractive towns and villages in the area

This is a spacious, well kept site, regularly mowed, with facilities well organised. As others have commented, the hook ups are spaced out and I did need to use a second cable. I chose to visit the area from seeing images of the attractive villages and towns with historic buildings, timbered, thatched, or painted numerous different colours, and we were not disappointed. Thaxted is a lovely small town, easily accessible from the site on a quiet road, while Saffron Walden must be one of the loveliest towns in England. We cycled directly from the site on quiet lanes to villages including Great Bardfield and also to Great Dunmow avoiding the main B184. We were aware of aircraft coming in to Stansted every few minutes from early morning to late at night, but did get used to it over the week. I had good contact with Vera while booking our 9 nights but we did not actually meet her until near the end of our stay. At this point Vera was extremely helpful in loaning us a battery charger as we were having problems with the caravan battery.

Great site. A hidden gem.

This site is just how you imagine a CL to be. Easy access from the road which leads into large field with fruit trees. Bring a long enough lead and you can park where you like. Several EHU points and the waste and fresh water area in the corner. Vera the owner is lovely and likes a good chat. Only ¾ mile from the beautiful unspoilt town of Thaxted. Lots of lovely villages within easy driving distance but don't go to Finchingfield on Sundays as it's full of motorcycles and limited parking. Plenty of walks from the site too. Some road noise and as it's on the flight path for Stansted expect noise from aircraft coming into land. However we soon ignored that. Thoroughly recommend this site and we'll definitely be returning.

Restful

The other reports said it all, a nice quiet site, we even heard owls at night, If you take 2 power leads you can pitch where you like. Even had a few apples and plums from trees on site. Easy access to the local villages and amenities. Thaxted has a choice of 4 pubs serving food.

Well kept lovely site.

Beautiful well kept site, short grass (looks like someones lawn at the entrance to the field)! Lots of trees and birds and the odd deer! Everything kept neat and tidy including the recycling centre and rubbish bins. Lots of space for the grandchildren to run around. Aeroplanes were absolutely no problem at all. Will definitely be back.

Spot On!

The recent reviews say it all really. We stayed for five nights recently as an end of season break. Yes, there were aircraft coming in for Stansted but they were interesting to watch and made no noise worth mentioning, so not a problem for us. The CL and its surroundings are kept in very good condition and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay - full credit to Mrs Sorrell. Easy access to public footpaths and good for those who like to walk their dog in the countryside. Thaxted is about 20 minutes' walk using the road and it is well worth visiting. The church is remarkable for a large village in a rural setting.

Only an overnighter

We only booked the day before but Mrs Sorrell was very helpful and friendly. We popped in to Thaxted on the way to the site and can recommend a stroll through the little town with its ancient guild hall, windmill, quaint alms houses and Dick Turpins Cottage. We had a very reasonable meal in the Swan pub, opposite the church. There is also the added bonus of a free car park, with a dedicated area for motorhomes/caravans - thank you Thaxted Parish Council! Wished we had more time at Holly Oak Farm, it was peaceful and in a lovely location. There looked to be plenty of footpaths for a great walk. We certainly hope to go back next year, for a little longer.
