This site was perfect for us for a one night stopover as we have family nearby. I spoke to Neil on phone several times before booking (to check pitch dry enough due to storms in previous weeks). He was very friendly and helpful. We arrived Saturday lunchtime and several matches were on so there were lots of people around. However it was no problem to drive past club house and pitch up on field to back. Neil was there to take payment and provide access code. We didn’t need code in end as gates were open when we arrived and departed to rugby being on and clubhouse being open. We spent the afternoon and evening in Bristol and got an Uber back to site. Cost £20. We will stay again as it’s hard to find Bristol stopovers especially now Baltic Wharf is closing.
Great Hidden Location
Stayed on this clean site for a couple of nights whilst visiting Bristol, we contacted Neil on arrival and he met us with the access code to the gates and keys to the private toilets. He informed us where everything was and also that we could use the Rugby Club. Unfortunately we didn't have time to sample their delights but will make a point of doing so next time. The site felt secure, it is used by the Rugby Club regularly for training and matches, but on our weekend it was relatively quiet as it was an away game, but for rugby fans it would be a bonus on home games.
Local facilities are within a 10 minute walk, with a well stocked Tesco Express, takeaways and local pub serving some cask ales. Central for regular bus routes into Bristol and also a stones throw from the Bristol to Bath Cycle path. For Parkrun enthusiasts the local Pomphrey Hill Park Run is just next door.
We found Neil very accommodating, as we also had a third vehicle to park for a couple of nights. Would recommend this site for any visitors to Bristol. We will certainly be back. Thanks for your hospitality
Good in so many ways but....
We used this site for 2 days whilst having the need to visit Bristol. In many ways this site is ideal as it is flat, quite firm grass pitches despite October rains good power connections, secure, good mobile reception and good access to cycle paths to Bristol and bus services locally.
However, the areas that desperately need improving:
1 directions - we tried to follow from the M5 but found them very confusing. When we arrived we saw no sign of the CL and it's important to know that the site is approached through the Cleve Rugby Club entrance, past the main building and a turning then to the right. Again absolutely no signage.
2 access - luckily arrival coincided with arrival of someone who'd been before. We were able to follow through a closed, not locked, gate.
3 code for the gate. When we came to leave the next morning with a tight timescale as we had an appointment 60 miles away we found the gate padlocked!!! It took a phone message (straight to answerphone!), an email, phone call to the security firm responsible for the site (useless and no promised follow up call). We eventually went back to the site where a couple who'd been before were able to let us know the number!!! THIS IS VERY SERIOUS!!! WHAT IF THERE HAD BEEN AN URGENT NEED TO LEAVE/GET MEDICAL ATTENTION AND NO WAY THROUGH THE GATES!!!
4 Price - the charges were not as published.
5 Recycling - didn't see any evidence
6 Access to toilet - locked!
7 Local information - zero on site.
8 Payment - no contact from site owner/manager and had to ask for bank details to pay.
This sounds negative but it's absolutely vital that attention is given to some of these basics. At the very least an email confirmation of booking should include basic site information about access, rubbish disposal, toilet access, payment AND MOST OF ALL THE ACCESS NUMBER FOR THE PADLOCK and some idea about when the gates are locked!
For all this, would we use this site again? Yes!
Convenient site for a visit to Bristol
Stayed for two nights in late September in order to meet up with a cousin. The site is easy to find and access at the Cleve Rugby Football Club. On the afternoon of our arrival it took some time to find someone in the club house who could tell us where where the pitches were. There are three double electric hook up posts for six level grass pitches. We pitched next to the hedge surrounding the children's play area which was very sheltered. The toilets which were large reasonably clean are located on the side of the large club house. Water and CWD are on the back of the building. The club bar is open in the evening if you want to have a drink. We did not see Mr. McNally during our stay and left the pitch money in an envelope with a member of staff. There is a bus stop about 100 yards outside the Club with one bus an hour to Bristol City Centre. However they are not very reliable! This is a very good site ideal for a stopover to Wales or Cornwall and we would use it again.
Great for access to Bristol
This is a lovely secluded site located to the side of a rugby club. Neil is very friendly and met us on arrival. The site is flat with short grass. There is a childrens play area on site and clean, well maintained toilets. There were no rugby games or functions taking place when we stayed so it was very quiet. However, a venue nearby had a function on the Saturday night with the DJ playing until 1am. I was able to sing along to most of the tracks it was that loud! As another reviewer has mentioned, if the club has a function, I imagine it would be quite loud as the club also has an outdoor space adjacent to the CL field. As there were no games on, the bar was not open at all. There is a Tesco Metro round the corner though so not a problem for food and drink. The gates were not shut at night (at least not before 11pm) but there were no unwelcome visitors. We would definitely stay again if visiting Bristol.
Great stopover
We stayed here for 2 nights on our way back from Cornwall, and to see family and friends in the area. Access to the site is very easy, with it being just off the ring road, which takes you straight to the M32/M4/M5. A tesco express is within walking distance, and a sainsburys a short drive away. We were the only people there at the time so it was great for the kids to run around. There was a wedding on at the venue on the Saturday night, and while you could hear the music, it was certainly no more of a disturbance than you get from kids on other sites. Very good value for money, had 2 nights here with hookup for the same as 1 night at a club site. The bloke who runs it was very friendly and helpful.
Only negative point for us was that there were some local kids riding their bikes up and down the access road on the Sunday, who were shouting things and making gestures towards my wife as she drove back in from the shops, would be better if the gates got closed and you got a key or something to gain access.
Will definitely book in again to visit family and friends in the future, and to break up the return journey when we go to Devon and Cornwall.
Baltic Wharf Full? Go Here
People always say Baltic Wharf is full, so if you want to be in Bristol try here. Balloon Festival? try here or as a rally. We attended life long friends (fellow caravaners who didn't know this CL existed!!) wedding anniversary do at the rugby club next door, so any noise was of our own making, but we didn't so it wasn't an issue. Neil does a grand job running this CL, so support him. Plenty of space to spread out. The toilets are convenient and spotless. 2 water taps. Rubbish bins and chemical disposal are discrete. Bristol City Centre is a bus ride away, so you bus pass holders don't have to worry about traffic in town. Follow the directions in the book, or the signs to Cleve RFC from the Ring Road, easy drive in and out. We have family in the area, this is twixt and between and now we know it will use again.
Not at all peaceful.
Stayed here two nights and both nights there were functions. Lots of disturbance from music and kids playing. Had I have known about both nights I'd have left after the first.
Can't fault the location for access to Bristol with an hourly bus service just outside.
It's in a nice area too and the guy running it was very friendly, but I would ask about functions if staying weekends. I also think the price is too high with the chance of being disturbed.
How wonderful to find this new CL near Bristol
We were so pleased to find this CL as we have relatives near Bristol and there are hardly any CLs around here apart from a Club Site, Baltic Wharf, which is always heavily booked up. The actual CL is within the rugby club and is therefore quite a safe site. The chap in charge is exceptionally friendly and helpful, the site is clean and secure with good facilities, it's close to a village with good amenities and there is a bus stop right outside which goes into Bristol centre. The only downside is that there are no showers but this is a new CL and he is planning to have them put in as soon as he can. Well worth a return visit.
Hayfields is a nice site on the grounds of Cleve Rugby Club
The site is behind the club buildings and on arrival you are left to find it, and the area it is in is also used for training sessions which happened all round our van...a bit unexpected. Otherwise a very quiet site locked up at night but accessible to campers given lock codes. Lots of space around set out mainly as rugby pitches but open for walking around to visitors. Bus stop right outside for Bristol destinations. Club house available if required and toilets for visitors.
As yet not in sites book but available all year, although not as cheap as most 5 van sites. Hope to use it again!
