Thinking about getting a Safefill cylinder

Hi All,

I'm thinking about getting a refillable Safefill gas cylinder to use in the caravan but also (quite a lot) on my BBQ at home. Currently I have a Calor patio gas cylinder I use for both which has a clip on regulator.

Does anybody know if it's possible to use a clip on regulator with a Safefill cylinder or am I going to have to change both sets of fittings?

And while I'm here ... the Club's FAQs say :

"We advise against user-owned, portable LPG cylinders refilling at Autogas refuelling sites."

but without any explanation as to why. Does anybody know why they take this position?

TIA,

Dave

That's one of the things that puts me off a fixed tank. With Safefill, you can visually check gas level with a quick scrutiny of the translucent cylinder, quite apart from the adverse environment that prevail with underslung tanks notwithstanding the gain of an unused outside gas locker. They're cheaper and lighter than underslung as well.

That's my feeling too, CY.  However, as a caravanner, it's less likely to be an issue..... I'm not aware of a fixed tank in a caravan.... I could be wrong though - I've just never considered it....

I think the Club probably prefer fixed systems with an external filler. You should also be aware that not all filling stations allow the filling of stand alone cylinders so before investing I would suggest checking locally that they will allow you to fill your freestanding unit. In recent years there has been quite a growth in self fill cylinders so many outlets are getting used to filling their own cylinders.

There are quite a few people here that use refillable cylinders and I am sure they will share their experiences with you.

You would imagine so given CAMC's stance on the matter. However, I understand that the sale of Calor at sites is a venture by the wardens at the individual sites.

Whilst having an outlet close to home is convenient, one can always top up whilst on one's travels. Various apps and websites are available. https://www.filllpg.co.uk/index.php?page=lpg.phphttps://www.camping-gas.com/Autogas/ and https://www.mylpg.eu/ are examples.

On one of my rare visits here, after waiting while it loads up....

While most of the discussion's from last year, one cylinder of each sounded an interesting idea.

Is it still a good idea with the difficulty in getting LPG which I understand is growing?

We have a Calorlite in the caravan plus a smaller steel spare, but I realise that when the Calorlite dies they'll swap it for a steel one, and I'm reluctant to carry the extra weight, so am considering alternatives.

Thanks for any up to date comments.

Not noticed any difference around here since the earlier shortages. Shell are still selling it and BP.

We don’t have problems in our area, sure Shell have stopped allowing us to fill up bottles on their forecourts but their are still plenty of independents offering the service.  I fill up approx twice a year and this year filled up in North Norfolk and Haverhill in Suffolk

I've filled/topped up five times this year, one of them in France whilst on my trips. Never had to detour more than a couple of miles from my route.

Safefill are considerably lighter than Calor bottles, even the Calorlite, so you can carry more gas for the same weight. I know nose weight is often an issue for caravaners so for them particularly, Safefill is a no-brainer.

HH, as I mentioned back on page one, we have two cylinders but tailored to our own needs....this means one 11kg Gaslow and one 11kg Repsol Spanish cylinder...the vast majority of our nights are not in the UK.

However the principle is the same and others have mentioned a second bottle being Calor.
that's great, but some don't have a locker that accommodates two (decent sized) bottles and this could make 'swapping' awkward.

While the OP mentioned Safefill specifically those with Gaslow or other brand with an external filler point, this hose from Gaslow allows a 'local cylinder' lime Calor to be sited outside the van and fed into the fill point, making use of swappable bottles should the need arise.

these days, versatility seems to be the name of the game, fill your refillable when convenient but have back up if swappable are more plentiful.

Have recently watched a video of a leaking refillable cylinder on another forum. The only reassurance was that the storage cabinets are vented. Very worrying in my opinion!
