Caravan insurance

I was given a lower premium by the C&CC.There are a lot of things that determine cost of premium your age/health/postcode/etc.etc. so what is a good premium for one not always for another.As to dash cams I didn't know companies gave a discount

I’ve recently had my caravan replaced after a fire. I rang several companies to insure my new van. CC were the most expensive and about twice as expensive as Liverpool Victoria and CC also wanted me to fit a tracker. C&CC wanted to charge me £20 every time I wanted to store my van on my front lawn for a few days. Then they would charge me another £20 to transfer it back to my normal storage site. NFU wouldn’t even give me a quote. The original insurers Caravan Guard insisted on an axle clamp, but my storage site only allows tow hitch locks. I went withLV with CSMA discount.

As to dash cams I didn't know companies gave a discount

Dave - my car is insured by AXA and they give a discount for a dashcam - I think it's £20.  Although I have one, I haven't told them (and claimed the discount).  If I am unfortunate enough to have an accident and it's not my fault, I'll tell them.  If it's my fault, I won't.

(But I recognise if it's serious, the Police have the power to require whatever evidence is available and that may include my dashcam recording)

Just had our renewal through from Towergate, who we have always found to be competitive. However I did a quick online check with SAGA & they wanted £41 less than Towergate for basically the same cover. Phoned Towergate & they agreed to lower the premium by £42  - result

Dashcam update; My car insurance is with Swift cover and they gave me a discount of £80 per year for the dashcam. I have also discovered if you are subjected to road rage if you email the dashcam footage to the Police they prosecute provided the footage is clear enough to read the number plate. The duo dashcam I have also provides GPS co-ordinates and it records your speed too so, the Police warn if the footage shows that you are or have broken the law they will prosecute you too. Towing a caravan on a country road should be done at a safe speed which is not always tolerated by other drivers who speed past sometimes near bends waving their fist out of their window...well the dashcam provides an element of satisfaction for caravaners that such stupidity can be dealt with approriately.

Never had this happen to me, and if it did I would ignore it, lifes too short and I'm on holiday. 

Not sure the police can prosecute using an uncalibrated and probably not too accurate camera.  Perhaps one of our serving or ex police colleagues would care to comment

Hi @Oneputt, it has happened to me but the irony was I was held up by a tractor which I don't think the guy behind knew about until he overtook me. There was barely enough space to overtake me and my caravan let alone a tractor and its trailer too. It's important to consider action by drivers as I describe could make one's life even shorter. As to whether the police would prosecute or not; before I bought the camera I spoke to west Yorkshire police who said yes they would prosecute and I have since had an email exchange with a serving officer who has given me an email address to send footage to. Like you I was sceptical until I spoke to the police. Like you say it would be good to hear the views of any club members who are also serving police officers. Perhaps the rules on dashcam footage vary between the different forces? 

From an insurance point of view the dashcam is irrefutable evidence and will destroy anyone who chooses to lie about what happened. With crash for cash now in the spotlight expect to see many more.
