We use a very good and cheap breakdown service called Autoaid. It's about £46a year but covers you and a married partner, any trailer you tow, home start to a maximum of £60, recover to your destination (minimum 1 mile from home), Over night hotel for 1 night for occupants in car, pluss other benefits.

We used them last year when the cat locked the car (long story) with the keys in the ignition. From call out / person on phone laughing, to all sorted on a cl, it was 40 minutes. Thats on a Friday bank holiday evening too.

The catch! They have none of thier own call out guys, they use local garages and you have to pay the bill up front and send them an invoice from the garage and they send you a cheque back within 7 days ish. So yes, if you got recovered with a caravan from Scotland to Dover it would be expensive and would need a pay to pay up front (credit card for example) but it was a great service and we are staying with them this year too. I think thier parent company is Direct Line or similar.
