Hi

we collect our new caravan today and are Caravan Virgins! My husband hasn't towed before and is worried about coming across a width restriction. Are there any Apps out there for warning you ? Have any of you ever had this problem ?

thanks in advance

michelle

I recently travelled down a dual carriageway which had road works and a width restriction, the outer lane was restricted to 6ft 6in so I had to remain in the first lane. The signs were clearly displayed, and were circular so I assume mandatory. Write the width of your unit on a piece of paper and fasten it to the sun visor as a reminder. I think (without checking) that my van is 7ft 4in wide  Worried

When new to towing we tried to stick to major roads as far as possible. Also, followed CC directions to sites as things like sat navs often think you should go down Impossible routes (ours once got shirty with us - repeatedly saying 'make a U turn' - because we wouldn't  go down a one way street and had carried on to the correct road)

Researching your intended route on maps helps a lot, check site web sites for approach directions, don`t rely totally on Sat Nav particulrily if the direction appears to be sending you down a "country lane" ignore it keep going and "regroup" at the next layby! Even after that sticky moments will occur as you gain experience.

Yes, probably lots of us have come across this. You don't need an App

Width restrictions are given well in advance whether permanent or temporary (as in road works). Know the width of your van and heed the advice on the sign. Not to do so will get you into trouble whether because of the width or the police.

Invest in a Tom Tom Caravan/MotorHome Sat Nav. You programme in your width, weight and length and you will always be routed on suitable roads
