What to put down on gravelled awning space

We are going away for the half term week and the site we are staying at has hard standing for the van and gravel for the awning. At this time of year what should we be putting down on the ground? Would we damage a breatheable groundsheet or could we put that down and then our spare camping carpet on top. As there is no grass to damage would this be ok and what do others do at this time of year on top of gravel? We are looking forward to extending our season and this has got me thinking.
