Volvo Trailer Stability Assist

I have a 2017 Volvo XC60 with trailer stability assist (TSA) built into the cars ESP as standard. The van we are looking at has a standard AL-KO hitch but no AL-KO stability control fitted. Can I safely assume that Volvo's stability control system through the car is enough to address potential car+van 'snaking' without the need to retrofit a AL-KO stability control on the van ?

I'd say so. The Al-ko stability is just a 'nice to have' and I think we all  managed to tow thousands of miles before it was even thought of. 👍

If your caravan is loaded correctly & the tail doesn't try to wag the dog due to weight mis-match you'll be fine.

Exactly, so make sure the nose weight is correct before you move off. Along with total weight, Gross train weight and all the other finicky measurements that keep you safe, like tyre pressures.

Hello Peter

Volvo are proven tow cars. I am biased because I've got an XC70 with trailer stability assist but for me it is the best out of the last 4 tow cars I've had.

I've had Alko stability for last 7 years and the only activations I have felt are when turning hard right into my own bumpy tarmac road at 15mph which activates the brakes. The rest of the time if it is doing anything it is unobtrusive.

If the van is laden correctly and your car is the heavier of the two vehicles by a good margin and you don't pretend to be "The Dukes of Hazard" I doubt your car trailer assist will be activated anyhow.

Electrikery is no substitute for safe driving. Too many gizmos and watered down skills.
