I live near Winchester in Hampshire and am new to caravaning. I have booked a site just south of Fort William in Scotland. Would somebody help me with how many stops I should have and where? I am used to driving long distances in Europe but not with a caravan.

I'm a bit further south of you just to the east of Fareham. If you are happy with early starts and you feel up to a one-stopper, then  Penrith is towable in a day. For you, just over 300 first day and 220 the second. There's a CL, Moss Thorn, at Newbiggin just off the A66 west of Penrith that's ten or fifteen minutes off the M6.  I did it to Penrith on Wimbledon Men's Final day with dire threats from OH. She only missed the first game by the time I'd tuned the TV. It's all dual carriageway and motorway, so an easy if tedious drive. I would concur with previous advice to route via Crianarich.

There's a CL even closer to the M6, turning off at the same junction, Slapestone Villa, if you can get on, as it is very popular.
