Nottingham route into Sandringham A17 v A47

Hi

We have a large 8ft caravan and Range Rover tow car (so long) and as we were new to caravanning 18 months ago, I used the A1/A47 route (as it is dual carriage some of the way and wide roads)

The A17 always comes up as the quickest and shortest way in, and I’m just wondering what people’s experience are on the A17 v A47 if you have done both?

Drive it all the time, just be aware it can get busy with HGV’s and they manage with no problem

Never towed it with quite so wide a van but never experienced any problems, apart from traffic jams around Kings Lynn, which the 47 route won’t avoid. For us in the Mansfield area the A17 is 22 miles shorter or about £5.50 worth of fuel.

I’m in Ravenshead so as you say it’s a fair bit shorter, might just give it a try and see then

We've been to Norfolk many a time and invariably travel through Nottingham from North Wales. We head to Grantham and up to the A17 but as you are north of Nottingham I would seriously recommend the A17 route as soon as you could get to it, presumably via the A617. The route from there is as straightforward as can be. The road around Kings Lynn is always busy but again straightforward and Sandringham site has easy access.

I know this is an old post but I am travelling to the Norfolk broads site in a few weeks from Lancashire heading down the A1 and was looking at both the routes mentioned, however I’ve also read the A17 has quite a few bad junctions on it due to single carriage way and is quite prone to serious accidents. Am I worrying too much or is it a reasonably safe route to take with a caravan.
First time in the area so no idea what the road network is like down there.

Thanks
