Back on topic. Has anyone who has swapped (whichever way) worked out or noticed difference in fuel costs? You would think that while towing your mpg is higher but then lower when on site, but then with a car would you do more visiting places off site? Or does it all just average out?
Last year over 4500 miles we averaged about 26 mpg with the motorhome. Our previous towcar averaged around 22 mpg whilst towing, so a useful, if not massive, improvement. The towcar whilst using it out and about on holiday was usually about 28/30 mpg. Having a motorhome I do now need a small car which has better economy that the previous towcar. In terms of overall costs my take on it is this. VED wise I am probably still paying less for two vehicles than I was previously for the towcar. The insurance on the motorhome is about the same it was with the caravan. Habitation service also about the same. In basic terms all I am paying extra (ignoring the investment) is one vehicle service extra which just happens to be in with the price of the car for the first three years. With a family thinking of changing to a motorhome their second vehicle might have to be a bit bigger than a couple of pensioners can get away with!!!
