Hello, we are new to this club and are going round in circles on choosing a motorhome. Been to the NEC and are off to Scotland soon but will go for 2nd hand when decision made.  Not want too big so can manage Scottish routes but also comfortable enough for a month abroad at some stge. Desperate to make an informed decision. Thought we had chosen - Burstner IXEO but it is not really for sleeping 3.

Any recommendations for a motorhome under 7 metres (6.75) suitable for a couple, another adult and dog.(3 adults.) It needs to have reasonable storage, suitable for a 3 bike bike carrier and any decent make. Thanks.

Some of the larger campervans might suit, they often have adaptable seating/sleeping areas and have better payloads for bikes etc. Have a look at Adria (for example.)

It’s such a personal decision that it’s almost impossible to make any suggestion. Layout is crucial but what suits one person, another will hate.

Above all, check you have a belted seat for the 3rd person when travelling and it’s imperative you look at the payload of any van you’re interested in. You will find many vans, especially those with a MGW of 3500kg, have tiny payloads and you’d not be able to carry 2 passengers, all the gear for 3 people, water, equipment and 3 bikes. You will also need to check the weight of those bikes and carrier and ensure the van is capable of having that weight hanging on the back and that you don’t overload the rear axle. Exceed the MGW of the van or the axle weights and you will be running it outside of its legal limits.

I know, it’s not easy.

Choosing a motorhome, or caravan for that matter, generally involves an element or two of compromise. Best of luck!

TW offers sound advice but I personally would not worry too much about the size of the motorhome as long as you keep it to 8 meters or under. Length is not a problem when driving on narrow roads, width can be but you can soon get used to driving a larger vehicle. I would consider it far more important to have the payload and layout you need.

Look at A-class motorhomes. Drop down double bed in the cab and quite often a double bed in the rear. Sleeping in the drop down bed is not to everyone's liking (I love it, the missus doesn't) especially if you have trouble climbing up or you want to go to the toilet in the night. The cab floor may be suitable for the dog. They are more expensive.

German A-class, especially the older ones, are perceived to be well built.

I presume you have at least a C1 licence because you won't fit in a 3,500kg motorhome.
