12v TV

If you intend always using your van on 240v EHU there's no need to get anything special. Several people buy bargains from their local supermarket - whatever takes your fancy.

On the other hand, if you're planning on only having 12v available you will need a 12v telly. You will see them in cvan accessory shops and see adverts in the mags for them. Avtex is a popular, if pricey, make.

Agree with Tinwheeler, if only using 240v then a tv from any of the supermarkets will do fine, ours was from Tesco and had built in DVD and a USB port so you could record/playback from a portable hard drive.

We now have a 12v/240v Cello tv as we do go off grid on occasions, the Cello is very much the same as Avtex but not as expensive.  If you need anymore info do not be afraid to ask on here there is always someone who will help out.

I have a Meos - from wedodigital - and that works 12v or mains and was much less expensive than Avtex - but Avtex are super quality - and you can get older models for great prices online. 

You sometimes find a 12v/240v on sale at Aldi, if your'e prepared to wait till they get them in.

I am not sure we would have bought one otherwise, we always used supermarket budget ones, but an Avtex came with our Bailey. It can be used on 240 and 12 volt and the picture quality is excellent, particularly on HD channels. Ours is just the freeview version,  but you can get one with both freeview and freesat tuners. This saves you carrying a separate satalite digi box. I believe the power consumption is fairly low, which is obviously an advantage if off grid.

You don't mention why you need a 12v TV are you intending to go to campsite where there is no electrics?  If you are always going to be on 230v electrics then you can buy any small TV on the market although I would suggest looking at a well known brand if you want the best picture. Also try and see them instore so that you can judge viewing angles. If you really need 12v then you will have less choice. I have an Avtex Combi TV which has superb picture. OK by comparision I grant that it is more expensive.

I would echo the advice above re considering whether you really need a 12v option.  We have an Avtex freeview/satellite TV (came with our van) and it is excellent on either, although I'm not a great one for TV on holiday, so have only bothered to connect the satellite up a couple of times when the digital signal was really poor.  Bigger sites in poor reception areas often have TV 'at the post' that you can connect into with a long aerial lead to get a digital signal.  

It comes down to how important is TV to you (if you 'can't do without it' I'd recommend having the satellite option) and how often, if ever will you be off EHU?  Then compare the cost of a small 'normal' TV and a dual voltage freeview/sat one and decide if the difference is worth it to you.

Another one that bought an Avtex and is delighted with it. If your van has a dedicated TV cupboard with a bracket, make sure your TV fits and can be taken out/put away easily. Ours doesn't because Hymer use a bracket for a specific make of TV and its not Avtex. An Avtext TV should fit ordinary brackets.
