Hello and thank you for allowing us to join the club. My husband and I live in New Zealand, and are newly retired. We own a motorhome in New Zealand, and are hiring a 6m motorhome in the UK for 2 months, April to June this year.

We would love any help, tips, advice that anyone can give us, as we realise it will be different touring in your country. Just planning our itinerary now, starting in Brighton, then touring Cornwall. We will include a little Wales and Scotland in the trip, but not take the ferry to Ireland- will save than for another trip!

Cheers.

Hello Tijger.  I recently posted on this site an enquiry about swapping my motorhome for a period of time with someone who wanted to do an exchange and tour this country using our motorhome. Please could you tell me if there is a caravan club in New Zealand I could contact or join to peruse this further.

Thank you and good luck with the touring.

Yes if you join the NZMCA New Zealand Motorhome and Caravan Association, and then register for their facebook page, that would be where to lodge the request. Make sure you get a motorhome with a Self containment certificate, as this is necessary to camp in a lot of places in NZ as we have a lot of places that motorhomes can stop overnight if they are certified self contained.

Be in touch if you need anymore help. Good luck

Chris

Hi, Tijger,  Similar name!

I too have been lucky enough to tour in your wonderful country and I'm pleased to see your extensive and careful planning for your trip over here.  The advice that you have already been given is great. If you can stretch to Wales, I would recommend Pembrokeshire, the far Western part of the UK.  It shares a similar Coastline to Cornwall but has slightly less traffic.

That brings me to two subjects of caution !

(1) Be aware that in comparison to NZ our traffic density is horrendous especially in the big cities.  (2)  Compared to NZ our fuel is very expensive.  Your visit clearly involves high mileages, so make sure that you cost that in.  Diesel at the moment is about £1. 23 per litre and is likely to increase in the budget due soon.

have a great time!

TF.

Thanks. Yes we have the Dutch version of Tiger.

Thanks for the advice too.

Miles won't be too high as it's over 2 months and we are planning 2 or 3 nights in most places and have 2 week long stays. Only city we are planning to take motor home to is Edinburgh and we have a week booked there.

Yes fuel will be a factor!

Thanks for the advice.

Hi Tijger, guess what my wife and I are hiring a 6m motorhome for a month long trip in the UK starting the end of April and we are from Australia.  The interesting part was that we are also planning to start our trip in Brighton and moving from there to Cornwall.  From there we head to Bath, Darwen then onto Glasgow and Edinburgh.  After that we are heading down to the Lincolnshire area before spending a week in London (without motorhome).  This is our very first trip to the UK and we like the flexibility that the motorhome will give us.  We have a caravan here but it is the fear of the unknown of how caravan parks work in the UK.  I am probably stressing over nothing but once we get there and get going I will probably realise that I am worrying over nothing.

wt - you are probably worrying about nothing although some of the campsites are a little tight by comparison with your wide open spaces - very tight I expect but......  It will be a breeze in a motorhome I am sure.  I do hope you enjoy - I am hoping to rent something to camp in in New Zealand fairly soon - but I think its more likely to be a large estate car than a MH - too much money just for one.  The Spaceships look quite good though.

Hi, hope you make it to NZ. Just be aware when you do hire that to stay in all the free places and the motorhome and caravan club sites you need to have a self containment certificate, or stay in places where toilets are available. As a single person you will be much safer in Camp grounds anyway, although NZ is a relatively safe place there are still some awful things that happen, so take care. We also look after our environment and there are fines for toilet waste etc which is why self containment is becoming important. There are a lot of dump stations, even some petrol stations have them! So have fun planning as NZ is a lovely place and very motorhome friendly, as long as  the environment is considered.
