Caravan security

We store our caravan on a farm (our house location doesnt permit caravan storage). It has 15 or so 'vans and motorhomes, a locked gate and a further locked barn but somehow it was broken into and a couple of caravans stolen. Luckily we were away at the time. Talking to one of the victims it seems that they had the same Alco wheel lock and a hitch lock. Mine has additional rear stay locks and I have turned the hitch to face the wall. It has Tracker but that's only useful if you know it's been stolen. It could be a couple of weeks between trips out.

The thieves found the "Sargeant" device in their Swift within minutes and ripped it out, discarding it on the driveway as they made their getaway.

What else could I do to protect my Bailey Unicorn Madrid?

Does anybody have experience of say a Datatool/GPS/Movement tracking device that might tell of movement or tampering?

Thanks John

I thought the tracker alerted you to movement of the caravan. Certainly, the one we had did.

I'm afraid there’s nothing you can do to prevent a determined 'professional' thief from taking your van. The best you can hope for is to deter a casual chancer.

Make sure you are properly insured, don’t spend too much on security and don’t get too attached to your van. It is easily replaced.

Does the farm have a CASSOA rating? www.cassoa.co.uk/

If not it might be worthwhile investigating other storage sites which are more secure.

They will probably be more expensive but should give you more peace of mind.

and it probably won’t be in a convenient location some considerable distance from home.

I don’t have a tracker installed, if the van is stolen I don’t want it back

Take the wheels off & put it on stands. Not many ne’er do wells paddle around with a choice of wheels & tyres with em👍🏻

Umm.. interesting comments. Inevitably you do have "personal" stuff (in your caravan) especially if one is using it regularly plus there is the hassle and delay in replacing.

Looking forward to hearing from someone who does have a "movement" detector (product name please).

Most of the trackers work on geofencing so you don't get informed until it moves, too late.

You need a GSM  enabled one with tilt detection, plenty on ebay, search TK103A.

I had a tandem caravan stolen in 2013- at the time it was a horrendous experience. I agree with all the comments from ‘they’ll have it if the want it’ to ‘ don’t put a tracker in it’.  The club insurance was brilliant and certainly reduced the stress of the event. Mine was stolen from a Bronze Cassoa and is now on a gold Cassoa. The scum that steal caravans are looking for the easiest heist they can get. They know where the alarms are in every model of caravan they are interested  in stealing. After looking at ways to prevent it again, I realised That hitchglitch’s comment is about right. You can change the position of the alarm. You can put another alarm in that they won’t know about . You can put extra security handles on the door. But in the end how far do you go? If the barstewards  want it and they can get it - it’s history! We tend not to keep personal stuff on the van now but the Gold Cassoa is really very secure. I know from experience that a stolen van can be one of the most stressful things you can go through and I feel for anyone who has been through it but as Hitch says, and very wisely- Good insurance and don’t get too fond of a particular van- it’s only a thing in the end which can be replaced.
