Agree with Lutz. My only advice would be to avoid the M Sport version. It comes with 20” wheels, thin hard tyres and suspension so hard that if you drive it over a two shilling piece you can tell if it’s heads or tails! . That’s not original, it’s what they used to say about Morgans!
Don’t know which version X3 you are thinking of but the G01 model is superb.

Only thing I would add is that the 3 series is not a very big car, don't know how much stuff you carry, but if I were looking at a beemer of that ilk for towing I would be looking at 5 series touring and if budget stretches the 530d x drive which would be a superb towcar.

It does depend on the size of caravan. I have had three BMW 3 series over the years, all have been good tow cars but I tow small caravans upto 1200 kg these cars have always been the 2.0 engine ie 320d. No problems encountered.
The 335d will be superb providing the weights are matched.

Have recently changed from the F11 520d SE tourer (rear wheel drive only) to the G31 520d M tourer with xdrive. It tows our Lunar Clubman SI without any problems, if anything better than the previous car. Highly recommend, despite a comment about the low profile tyres, the ride when towing is very positive and comfortable.
First BMW was a 320d, towed a Bailey Olympus 406 without problems, moved to the bigger car for the extra kerb weight.
