well as they said they were upgrading the membership system (which must be at the core of everything that requires signing on) - yes it probably did need to be down. The core of The club systems was(and I would think still is) SAP which is one of the worlds leading commercially available packages. I have never found a way to either move such systems to a different machine whilst keeping the old one going (tried mirroring it was a nightmare) OR updating a software release that requires a database rebuild that did not require an outage.

Ah! That explans it! I'm not IT savvy at all, but SAP at work is a PITA ...... why have one button press when you can have 10

What I think is different about the recent shut-down is that someone, somewhere (and possibly not an IT implementer person) has found the sense to (1) only allow one small (and hopefully easily reversible) change at a time, (2) tell the users it is going to happen before hand and (3) advise them of a timescale that is quadruple the IT people's estimate.   That way we all feel happy in the end.

How long the site was off the net is fairly irrelevant....the fact that the forum returns with all the same old problems and failures makes you wonder if there actually is an IT department

but they never said they were doing anything to the forum indeed the stated policy is to replace it at some time with different software so why mess with it now? The club has a plethora of system beyond the forum, all of which is probably much more "mission critical". The problem is that the membership part is key to signing on so any changes to that will require a forum outage.

Too many members running to Miss with pathetic reasons, OK if it's out and out abuse then fair play report it ,but as most people say the forum is not real life ,

How do you know the number of people who report others and how many people are the subject of reports? How do you know the reasons are pathetic? Pure supposition on your part, Husky, as none of us ordinary posters can possibly know.

Are you saying it's perfectly acceptable to break the T&Cs by being offensive to the staff/Champions?

Think carefully because if your answer is 'yes', you are dropping yourself into the mire. If your answer is 'no', then you have just negated your own statements re doing away with the report button. There is no middle way you either have the button or not. You cannot suddenly invent it if a serious event occurs.
