Hi,

I'm looking to buy a sat nav for towing a caravan but it doesn't have to be specifically for it.

I've looked at the Tom Tom Go Professional 520, has anyone used this or can recommend a suitable device?

Thanks.

Type Caravan SatNav into Amazon UK. there are many choices from £100 upwards. Most importantly there are reviews, both good and bad from people who have bought them.

I just looked at the Garmin one on there and it's £100 cheaper than Halfords.

I’ve got a Tom Tom Go Camper which theoretically prevents you from getting yourself into difficulties, once you’ve programmed in your set up and dimensions. Result is, if I slavishly follow it I still get into difficult situations, so I conclude paying the extra for a ‘specialist’ system is probably a waste of money. It also stopped working at a very inconvenient moment on the motorway system around Barcelona this year, only to resume operations the following day!

I have the snooper dedicated to HGV’s, supposedly, however still have problems.

I was considering buying the Tom Tom unit at the caravan show in Feb, but was put off by the salesman, the reason being, in his words, all systems are programmed using the same data from the same source. Not absolutely sure of the source, but it is the organisation that controls road signage, e.g. low bridge, narrow road, sharp bend, gradients etc.

So the problem lies with the data supplied, not the units themselves, unless you are using the land rover built in, which is appalling.

I added the TomTom camper maps to my Start 60 and I have to say they have been pretty reliable. You do get the opportunity to review the route and something I particularly like is the option to view the destination. No Sat Nav should be slavishly followed without some checking against a map.

As an aside I now have a built in TomTom sat nav in my motorhome. As yet I am not completely confident in it but have been reasonably happy with the routes selected. However I do have to keep an eye on where it wants to take me and if I am not sure I go where I think we should go!
