What Would a UK Club Type Aire Look Like

With all the recent discussion on CT around the different needs of Motorhome touring opposed to touring with a Caravan and the shift in club member ownership towards motorhomes let’s try looking forward for once and discuss what a UK Club type aire would look like.

My thoughts are that the club would have 3 options in providing a club type Aire.

1.       Build a new dedicated site. Basic needs would be a booking system, which is already in place, payment made in full before arrival, small change to the booking system required, ANPR, trials already in place. The site wouldn’t need a facilities block, just a chemical waste point to be provided, EHU if required would be by metering, trials already in place and fresh water could also be available by metering. I would limit the size of the site to 10 units and have a maximum stay of 2 nights. The biggest issues the club would face in providing this would be finding the right location at the right price and obtaining planning permission.

2.       Convert an existing site. Convert all or part of an existing site owned by the club. Same requirements as in option 1. Planning permission could be an issue.

3.        CL Network. Partner with the existing CL network owners to provide an aire type site, again with the same requirements as option1.

I think that either options 2 or 3 should be trialed first before committing major expenditure to option 1.  Again just my thoughts, neither right or wrong.

What would your club type aire look like and how would you implement it.

Latest announcement from Club……..four more sites are closing for good. RIP Nunnykirk and Bromyard Downs, I don’t know the other two, but suspect they are similar. Another two at least of the basic sites I mentioned previously. They will have been too remote for a lot of folks, but for many a great overnight stop location as well as beautiful locations.

It’s 5 sites in total, TDA, and that’s what I was getting at above. You can bet the folk who want aires won’t want them in those 5 locations!

GE, with CAMC closing a few sites at the end of this season, you might want to suggest the club turns them into your model aire sites instead.

I suppose those sites aren’t where you want them…….

There’s an Aire type stopover a mile or so from Nunnykirk, with services. It was full last time we tried. Fontburn Reservoir. Rothbury has a huge car park across the river, a few dedicated spaces for overnight and a CPD point would be great there, 400 metres into town.

I must have missed one😁 We only know Nunnykirk and Bromyard. Yes, have to agree about locations of those two, lovely places if you like NT EH properties, walking, cycling. But the daily bus might be a bit of a wait🤣

No one has come back on my mention of unstaffed Aires being vandalised in this country. We like remote unstaffed stopovers, but are more intimidated by those located in towns. You wouldn’t camp in Clumber Park anywhere other than behind the Clubs barriers and reception I can tell you☹️

Might High Onn be another on that list? It seemed to be mothballed for this year with a decision on its future delayed but perhaps has now been made? I think the fate of Bromyard Downs has been under consideration for some years. Shame really as its a nice little site.

You could well be right DK. Club is catering for those who want to take the kitchen sink, don’t want any kind of exertion while staying, need their location to be sanitised, manicured and patrolled. And for this they can set the prices at whatever they want as folks will pay it. If it wasn’t for the CL network, I think campers like us would be leaving in droves.

We tend to think of CLs/CS as UK Aires, but many are too remote for those used to overseas Aires.

I have not said that I want the club to implement aire type sites I was asking what such a site would look like.

That may have been your intention however you posted:

Those part in bold are clearly saying what you think the club should do.

But why not table a question for the AGM as well as writing in to the club with your suggestions?

GE, it’s no more personal than you made it originally. As has been pointed out, why couch the OP in the terms you did if it’s not your personal thoughts or wishes? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I was explicit in my words stating that it was my thoughts and that they may be right or wrong. Saying they are my wishes are your words not mine.
