Staying on Harris & Lewis

Can anyone recommend a caravan site on either of these isles suitable for an 8m caravan?

Or have experience of using the ferry with a caravan to there? We had thought of leaving the van on a mainland site and just taking the car over for a fews days but I think the clubs frown on vans being left unoccupied .

See this thread HERE

You can leave your van on a CAMC site for up to 48 hours, if I remember correctly, with the warden's permission. An 8m van should be OK on Lewis-Harris if you stick to the major roads.

Thank you - I did find the other thread but they have a MH so are a bit more flexible than us! Also most sites seem to be geared to MH’s and we know we are a bit big!

Caravans are definitely in a minority in the Hebrides but my links are still relevant to touring with a caravan. Look up some of the sites and you will be able to judge space. For instance, although only a couple are shown in this pic, we encountered large-ish caravans pitched at Eilean Fraoich where most pitches were big enough but, a word of caution, don't expect CAMC type sites or the same spacing.

Sally, it may be worth asking the C&CC site at Oban, as when we were there one year another couple of caravanners left their vans there for a good few days when they headed to the Islands. I appreciate that it is a fair distance to the ferries to Lewis & Harris, but they obviously thought it worth while doing.

In the other thread I mentioned the Andrew Ditton videos. He used to tow a large Airstream caravan with a pickup which is a pretty big outfit.

Thank you Nellie, I did contact them re leaving the van on site for a couple of days but they came back saying vans should be occupied at all times.

Sorry to hear that, they must have changed their thinking over the years.
