Hi,

I have a lightweight Elddis Vogue that max weight is 1000kgs.  I currently tow with a Kangoo 1.6 petrol and struggle with headwinds or long hills. I am considering the Yeti 1.2 petrol turbo as I'm not wanting a diesel.  Despite being a much smaller engine its b.h.p and torgue is a lot more than the Kangoo.  Has anyone had experience with this vehicle and a fairly light caravan. Any comments/help appreciated.

I tow with a Skoda Fabia Estate using the same 1.2 petrol engine. My unit is a Trigano Rubis which has a maximum weight of 750kg. I would not want to tow anything much heavier than this as I think you would struggle especially on steep hills. The 1.4 petrol turbo might be a better option.

No matter how efficient it is, a small petrol engine will struggle with a 1000Kg load on the back. IMHO you would need at least a 1.6 and preferably a diesel.

At what engine revs? Though having never driven the model of car you suggest I agree with Cyber .... there's no substitute for cubes!

I doubt that you will find many able to give an opinion based on ownership to tow a 1,000kg 'van

Towing a lightweight van is not unusual. I tow an Eriba Triton. I usually run it at around 1050/1100 when away for short breaks but max it can be 1200kg.

Previous tug was a Yeti 2L 110bhp diesel. It performed well and the great advantage was being able to remove the three rear seats.

I did consider the 1.2 petrol at the time as I had a lighter Eriba, and on the continent at the time that choice of engine was not uncommon for lighter vans. I decided against it as I wanted something that would be capable of more than "coping"

If you have not bought then do not dismiss a petrol engine. If you can source the 1.4 then this would be a good match.

I now have the 1.5 petrol in my Audi A3 and I'm very impressed. Torque is same at 250N/m as previous diesel whilst bhp is 150 as opposed to 110. Importantly the torque is available across a far wider rev range and the car pulls the van better than the Yeti. Economy is also excellent. Two up for a light trip has shown 40mpg. Fully loaded car and van for 6 weeks through Europe and 2,500 miles was over 34mpg.
