We will be taking delivery shortly of a new camper van having been out of the market for 18 months and not used a Club site for a couple of years. Thought we would do a two day shakedown trip to York in April only to find the cost is £115 for two nights, 2 adults and no awning. Can anybody tell me whether this includes breakfast and evening meal?

A lot has happened in recent years regarding over night stops for motorhomes. Can't at the moment recall the name of the group but there is a Facebook Group that suggests various pubs all over the country which seems popular. Some of them make a small charge which they will forego if you eat at the pub and others work on the basis of free over night parking if you buy a meal. Obviously if people are really intent on spending the minimum on a stop over the requirement to have a meal might too much for some? I think there are encouraging signs that some councils are making an effort to provide over night parking. It was posted on here about Bude but I suspect the £20 fee will too much for some. Campsites have a long tradition of providing a safe stopping place but that has taken years to reach the stage it is now at. It will probably be a fair while  before those that want cheap or free stopovers will be satisfied?

We have been using pub stopovers for a couple of years now, and really enjoy them. We tend to arrive around 4.30-5pm, so often a quiet time for the pub, post afternoon meal, pre evening diners. Our modus operandi is to phone ahead (having done our research), say hello on arrival, park up in car park, walk the dog, relax an hour or so, then head down to the pub, with or without hound, for a meal around 6.30 ish, depending on when table available. We usually get back into MH around 9pm, give hound a second walk, then bed down for evening. You will get a bit of noise around as pub goers leave, but it’s never been excessive at any we have chosen, and by 10.45pm, is as quiet as any Club Site. Careful parking is key, you want to avoid as much as possible anyone parking up too close, but we have never shared a pub stopover with other MHs, only cars that left in the evening, so empty car park by 11pm. There’s usually no rush to get you out of the car park next morning. Every pub landlord we have met has been great, put out a bollard for you, ask if all is ok. Lots own touring vehicles themselves, so they know the ropes. A chosen pub stopover for us, even if free to stay, is a treat, we relax and let someone else do the cooking😁

We did originally join Britstops, back when it was cheap, but it’s been sold on now, and frankly you don’t need to join. A lot of pub stopovers are on S4Sites, and if they aren’t, we simply politely ask the pub managers if we can stay in the car park overnight, if we eat in the pub. They are business people, they don’t say no😁 Some have a few facilities (even hook ups) but most don’t. You just be respectful and behave.

By the photos posted on the group some do seem a bit cramped but others seem much more spacious. I suppose Google Earth would be a good way of establishing whether you would have enough room? I am pretty sure I saw one of the Roaming Radfords videos recently where they used one and their van is over 8 metres long.
