Clean Air Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester (GM) is taking action to improve air quality on local roads – now and for future generations.

All ten local authorities have worked together to develop the Greater Manchester Clean Air Plan. This will help bring nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels on local roads within legal limits by 2024. The final Clean Air Plan has now been approved by the councils, following a public consultation and further development work.

It includes a Greater Manchester-wide Clean Air Zone, which is anticipated to launch on 30 May 2022. More than £120m in government funding will also be available to support eligible Greater Manchester businesses, people and organisations to move to cleaner vehicles before the Zone is introduced.

The Club will be making a representation on behalf of members, however, if members themselves want to get involved the more input the better.

Please visit Clean Air Greater Manchester for more information and please also share with anyone who might be interested, or visit the consultation here: https://cleanairgm.com/consultation

We don't pay it for our EV. I'd rather pay a tax for road usage than continue to pollute. We pay it on our motorhome and it's no doubt going to cost more the older the engine becomes. Our ev produces a tiny amount of particulates, mostly from the tyres on road surfaces. People are breathing in a variety of particulates, not good for any of us.

Have you not got a range extender petrol enginesurprised

Posted on 12/01/2022 11:27

Well what a surprise I think I have got a range extender JVB, thank you for remninding me and it only produces minimum particulates when we occasionally fill it up with 8 PINTS of petrol...and that is why we don't pay VED. kiss (The REX is now "extinct" in Europe, unfortunately. It was a sensible solution to provide long range battery use but the better news is that most EVs are now up to speed on battery power.)

Sorry let's get back to the things that do pollute!

I think you are probably in a minority of one if you want to pay . I listened to a Radio 4  feature recently where the subject of replacing duty currently coming from fuel  was going to come from and they were unable to find an EV owner who thought it should be them. Most replies could be summed up as " I didn't pay all this money (for the EV) to start paying to use it"

I was talking about road usage for all in the future when a solution has hopefully been found for pollution but taxes would still be needed to fund roads. But that is a long way off. Fuel duty pays the Gov well too so a return will need to be found from somewhere.

Initial outlay for an EV is set against minimal running costs.

They were talking about road usage schemes too ie charges per mile and maybe variable at different times of the day. However until then I have say those who can afford to buy a subsidized vehicle   and avoid it seems all charges including congestion are on a good thing. I may do it myself when the Yaris goes.

David, first of all, we haven't got a subsidised vehicle, so your comments although not personal are a bit wide of the mark. What people can afford is what they decide in relation to their personal finances. I note many company cars are now EVs and that will introduce people to their benefits. But I think encouragement is needed for some to use less polluting vehicles, these might not be EVs at present but at least the better engineered newer ice engines.

so .... no pollution produced when building the various bits of the car that are shipped around the world prior to assembly?

At the moment aren't we all paying differing levels of VED anyway depending on how good or bad our car's emissions are?

Posted on 12/01/2022 12:52

It's not universal. My last tow car was an automatic Kia Sorento and my annual VED was approaching, and has now probably exceeded, £500 a year. My first motorhome which was not Euro six, my annual VED was around £245. I don't know what the relative emissions were but I doubt they were that far apart? This is relevant to this discussion because it seems motorhomes are being included in the zone charging but cars, that could be equally polluting are not being charged. As I mentioned in an earlier post it is likely that motorhomes have been lumped together with vehicles based on the same cab so perhaps there is a sort of logic but I can understand owners of motorhomes feeling they not being justly dealt with. If all vehicles were to be charged that is a different matter?
