Tips for advertising pups

No - I wouldn't touch any website that sells animals as it is far too easy to make snap decisions after browsing website like that without properly considering the commitment. When we adopted a rescue dog who turned out to be pregnant we advertised in the local vets and kennels as you are more likely to come across responsible owners. I also asked people to fill in a homing form for the pups and would consider asking to do a homecheck. I would also be sending pups off with a contract making sure if they needed to be rehomed in future they would be returned to me.

Good post 'Athel', anyone that is selling/giving puppies have a responsibility to ensure they go to good homes, and I am NOT saying that 'Pippah' is not responsible but some means of selling deny that route.

Thank you Athel and Dave we are definitely the responsible variety and have always made it a condition before that they could come back in case of difficulty.   I just wondered if in the new age advertising had moved onto the web.

I agree with the others re the likes of Gumtree etc.  It is too easy for people to buy a cute puppy having done no research into the breed whatsoever.  They buy a cute puppy, then realise that they can't cope when that puppy becomes an adult.  

Too many dogs end up in rescue because of this.

Until five years ago, I had Labs for 30 years.  They were wonderful dogs, but that took a lot of training, hard work and commitment ( the Cocker Spaniel I have now is even more hard work )

I would say your best bet is to find a Labrador forum and ask advice from the experienced people on there.

Pippah, before we adopted Lady we looked at various websites and even contacted a couple of sellers but the replies were so vague and dodgy that we quickly gave that up as a bad job. Instead we went, as we had done previously to the Irish Setter Breeders Club which has a rescue section but also places pups such as the ones you've described. Is there a similar club for Labrador breeders? At least that way you're guaranteed the pups will go to good, loving homes.

Thank you both Lynn and moulsey very helpful ideas.  I understand what you say about Gumtree although can't help but wonder why it would be more likely for the impulse buyer than a local paper ad.  This Labrador line came into my Grandfathers life and we have kept it going since and have always told people not to buy if at all unsure of them always with the emphasis of letting us know if there were problems.  I also had one litter of GSDs and had grave doubts about one buyer who insisted she had had them before and could cope with the pup.  I asked what had happened to her last one and she said her young son had lost it in the woods!  9 months later I took pup back judging by her attitude to small boys something more than lost in the woods had happened .  That started my career rescuing GSDs while my daughter keeps the Labs going.  Will try lab rescue too thank you.

Because my daughter was so stressed by the house move and lack of interest in the pups by local advertising I tried "preloved". And fingers crossed it  is an option.  A delightful lady came today and paid a deposit on a girl.  A couple of people have gone very quiet when asked for their background home check etc.  It seems very little different to local advertising.really.  one lady was going to come from Guernsey for 2 but found a pair closer to home.  So folk I wouldn't rule out online stuff.  Having said that Gumtree looked very bad with very few for sale.  Preloved has lots of safety info up and advice on buying a pet online.  Todays lady had thought the house internet dodgy until her sister recommended.  Just keeping an open mind here
