Dog's Teeth

please could anyone recommend something for my nearly 12 year old Labrador.  She has just had an expensive teeth clean at the vet and I am keen to prevent another.  I will persevere with plaque off and am looking for an effective chew bone?  Dentastix or anything else edible go into the stomach almost instantly without touching the teeth!  She has dried food which the other dog chews politely and I feel works on the teeth that way but again the Lab just gulps the lot she could win any food eating competition.  I recently saw those nobbly food bowls which would slow things a bit but I can't see that helping the teeth.   I may try cleaning them but that would be very challenging as she has been head shy since a pup when she had a cyst removed.  Thanks in advance.

Pip, I bought 2 thick sausage like 'play chews' many years ago & they're still ok now, rough looking but serviceable. They have short knobby/pointy bits on them, within the knobby bits I spoon in rough peanut butter, a light spread, because they can't lick it all off they happily chew it. I believe they're from the 'Kong' makers. Not cheap but I still use them. Luckily the Dentastix last my 2 about 3mins so they can be used too.

Thanks Rocky - I have seen a Kong type - probably a good investment - the bill yesterday was £200 and anxiety was high as she is epileptic but the smell had become too bad - not only unpleasant but it can't have been healthy either.  undecided

Pip, have you tried the charcoal biscuits from pet stores. My old Retriever suffered from bad breath & the fact She was a 'licker' of faces it was noticed. The Vet suggested the charcoal biscuits, they were good for Her. I now include them for my 2 as well. Dry hard biscuits plus it increases their water intake-always a good thingsmile

Just had the same issue with one of  ours (7 year old Border Collie,£256 bill) Our Vet a Collie owner himself, has told us Dentistix only work on the back teeth, for the front teeth raw marrow bones as already stated, but take the bone away when they start to crunch it.

Pip, have you considered raw peeled carrots? Alfie has one most days, ok he is only eleven months old, but the vet said a week ago (on his twice yearly once over) that his teeth were in excellent condition, I mentioned the carrots and she said they were v.good for dogs and may help to keep his teeth clean. Hope this helps.....cool
