Dog bed and stuff

our cocker is now 13 months and has always slept in a cage in the kitchen. We are considering if its time to leave her on a bed / dog basket in the kitchen or hall or landing. and was wondering if people use cages indefinitely or just for early training. Any thoughts on this potenial change good or bad idea.

poor thing had really bad diahrea last night and her mattress was covered she obviously didn't want to wake us so sat there until six before she barked . Got me thinking what a shame it was that she was effectively imprisoned.
