The Nightjar

Nightjar’s are a redlist species and are in decline. They are a nocturnal bird that hunt on moths, beetles and crane flies.

In June the RSPB visited Ambersham and Heyshott commons in West Sussex to do a nightjar survey where they identified a minimum of 16 nightjar territories. A follow up survey took place last night with the intention of confirming these territories and to pick up any other territories that might have been missed the first time round. I will update you on how they got on when I have more information.

In the meantime has anyone seen the nightjar or heard it hawking for food during the twilight hours when out on site or in your local area?

For more information on the Nightjar have a look at the RSPB or BBC Nature websites.
