The bird on the attached photos were photographed on the campsite at Hohenstadt some 18 mls west of Ulm in Germany and about 2400 feet above sea level. I will be pleased if anyone can tell me the name of the bird.

Just a slight resemblance to a cirl bunting mind which just made me a tad uncertain, CY. But my money is on yellowhammer.

Thanks!  Now found some pictures on line and can see it was a male yellowhammer, not a bird we see in northern parts.

Until Micky mentioned Cirl Bunting I would have said Yellowhammer. On my phone I can enlarge the photo well and see quite a bit or red/brown colouring so I'm plumping for the Cirl....smile

oops, our posts crossed Kj so there you go, two different thoughts. We used to have a flock of visiting Yellowhammers in our garden and they were very yellow, canary bright in some cases.

Yellow hammer, generally a Cirl Bunting has a pronounced black chin at this time of the year.  Collins birdguide edition 2 see page 399

Female and immature male cirls lack that black throat. Kyell's third top photo certainly has some specific resemblance to cirl.

Personally due to the face markings i'll stick with Yellowhammer. Juveniles have little or no facial yellow.
