English Football - Has it Died

I think that it was better many years ago when a player was expected to have come from the area where the team was based in.

I know that that can never be the case again, but we certainly do seem to have gone to having no local representation at all today. its just Cheque book football.

I hate to say this, but I'm not a football fan, and I figured out this donkeys years ago.  Its not rocket science you know.  Our football clubs pays millions for players.  Its Europeans playing in football and its Aussies for rugby.  Where are the scouts that used to be

Thats the thing these days unfrotunately its all about money and the english league has a shortage of English players. Scottish football has had to adapt over the years as the clubs here simply can't afford to buy the best overseas players so young scottish talent is getting a chance and it is good to see. Hearts for example have built a very good team with mainly young scottish players as have Hibs which is very encouraging to see, even Celtic have quite a few young scottish players in their team. I believe that in the long run this will help the Scottish national team. I do like watching english football though and would like to see more local players in the teams but sadly I can't see that happening any time soon as they don't seem to get a chance

I remember some 60+ years ago watchiing Spurs from the stands. Right in the corner where the cold wind blows in!  Didn't enjoy it then and have never been or watched footy on the box ever since.

I have just watched the Chelsea v Man City cup tie. Gary Cahill goes off for a short while to receive attention and the only Englishmen left on the pitch are the 3 officials. What chance the national team

Manchester City played a lot of young players, all from their youth academy, mostly teenagers. None of them were English. There must be good young players in this country, somewhere.

And that, in a nutshell, sums upthe whole farce with Premier League clubs - apparently Man City's manager was wary of another match on Wednesday - don't worry about the FA Cup, we'll just put out a load of youngsters - what a great chance to give some yung English players a taste of the big time, a bit of experience for the future. But not a bit of it - just another bunch of foreign players to bring on.

Incidentally I thought Alan Shearer's comment about Barcelona was very interesting. They have another match - er against Arsenal - on Tuesday, but didn't "rest" any of their top players on Saturday.

But even he only came on as a late sub!

Write your comments here...That was when it was still a game played by football players instead of the primadoners of today,being paid the sort of money that for anyone wanting to go to the "matches" needs a morgage for the tickets, lets hope that the worm is starting to turn with the recent walkout

Prices at Spanish matches are even higher. We've been to Barcelona twice for Champions' League games. We paid €100 each, both times. Seats were unreserved, behind netting, nearer the moon than the pitch, no cover. Toilets? Forget it. Stairways wide and steep, no handrails, a disaster just waiting to happen. An old, crumbling concrete stadium, makes the "old Wembley" look posh.

But their team, absolute magic.
