Which Vacuum Cleaner

We've always taken a vacuum cleaner away in the caravan as we find it difficult to take the van home for cleaning.  We generally have a good clean and vacuum through when packing up on our final day.

I'm beginning to change my mind about the way we do things now.  With all the improvements made with the rechargeable/ cordless vacuums, I'm considering purchasing one for home and not takin a vacuum in the van.  I'm sure we can manage with a broom and shaking carpets outside while we are away in the van.  When we are then back home we could take the cordless vacuum up to storeage for a more thorough go through.

Have you a preference for an upright or cylinder cleaner? Our Sebo upright is now about 16 years old and still going strong. Before that we had a Miele cylinder, even older, but still working. Downside, perhaps, is neither is a lightweight.

I must admit that we are finding lugging the Sebo upstairs is getting a bit much as we get older. If you go onto the JL website here you can select either upright or cylinder. Both have the ability to select cleaners by weight. The cordless varieties seem to be the lightest but my concern would be the life of the battery. I don't know if its still the case buy Dyson used to have a fixed price for all serviceable items.  Assuming that you have mainly carpets upstairs and just wanted a cheaper second cleaner then the mains VAX at £89 seems good value. Years ago the Electrolux  550 would have fitted the bill but its a long times since they have been made!!! The Miele Classic cylinder at £119 only weighs just over 4kgs and would be handy for doing the stairs.

i am thinking of buying a new Vacuum cleaner and wondered if anyone could advise . These are my requirements,

must have good suction

The tools must be easy to assemble and fit for purpose.

A longish lead if mains electric type

Easy to empty , and light enough to carry upstairs

I would also like opinions on both bagless and cordless cleaners.Can you help?

Well  those  were  the  requirements  that  my  sister ( 85 years  young  )  had  and,  yesterday,  she  bought  herself  a  Dyson  Animal  Rechargeable and  traded  in  her  Dyson  "Weighs  a  Ton"  mains  type !!

Saw  her  today  &  even  her  moggy  is  impressed  !!

I bought one of these too; I cannot recommend enough. 

PROS: light/instantly available-just take it off the wall and use. Loads of attachments (mine has anyway) for every need. One charge does my whole (small) house.

CONS: battery only lasts about 20 mins (good for me but maybe not for you). All bits and pieces need regular cleaning (head/filter/dust collecting thingy)

i have had many a vacuum cleaner in the past but this one surpasses all expectations. I make sure that when I am using to clean the entire house and have finished, if there is power left, I use the turbo just to run the battery down to 'dead' then re-charge. Don't forget to hit the button again tho, to turn off turbo. 

It is great to take to the caravan for a good old clean and take home again
