I watched a herd of cattle today (beautiful Limousin breed) and not for the first time, was struck by their gentle, inquisitive nature. They wandered around the large field, but stayed together as a group....for companionship, I assume. They seemed drawn to where people were, and were clearly fascinated.

The young ones were eating grass, but still returned to their mother sometimes, to suckle.

I couldn't help but think about the ones that were unfortunate to have been born male, and that they would soon be carted off to a slaughter-house to have a bolt fired through their head. And all the while, right up to the end, putting their trust in humans........
