Can anyone give any tips on removing (engine) oil stains from carpets; following a breakdown in France the caaravan was towed to a garage with oil everywhere so impossible to avoid treading in it. Would an ordinary household cleaner such as "Vanish" be strong enough?

Give it a try ..... you can't make things any worse. In the past I've scrubbed Swafega into oil marks with reasonable success.

Oh dear!  That sounds messy.

Just a thought, if all else fails, you could consider checking out your local carpet shop and looking for an offcut of good quality carpet and having a replacement either fitted or as a removeable piece.

Best of luck.

What about washing-up liquid? If I get oil or grease on my hands (should be wearing gloves of course) I have found it to be good at getting it off the hands.

WD40 believe it or not. I have used it for the odd oil spots on carpet and it works well.

We have used a product called Koh on stubborn stains with good results.

SIL got mayonnaise on his trousers and the dry cleaners could not shift it so he was going to throw them away, but this Koh stuff removed it.

You can buy it on line,
