A few months ago in October 2015, a 53 year old woman Tracy Curtis-Taylor set off from the UK in her open cockpit Stearman bi-plane Spirit of Artemis" to fly the 14,600 mile route to Australia. Re-creating the cround breaking flight of Amey Johnson 80 years or so ago.
I read a short paragraph in the times last week to say that she had arrived in Australia but the news hardly caused a ripple here!
Her difficult flight over no less than 23 Countries, making well over 25 fuel stops, would have been quite a feat of endurance had it been conducted in a modern twin engined Cessna or Piper aircraft, but solo in an open cockpit machine?? In all weathers?? Flying 6-8 hours every day ??
Yes!- I know she had a more modern support aircraft backing her up, but I still think it a feat deserving of far more acclamation than the almost total dis-interest shown by the British media.
It seems that any slight "wardrobe malfunction" affecting a so called Celebrety can get front page status, but a real and brave effort like that can be ignored just because she was not well known?
I dont' know her and have no connection or angle here.
