Radio 2 Dumbing Down?

Is it me, or is BBC Radio 2 going through a dumbing down phase.

Chris Evans is off at the moment, he can be bad enough at times, but the female standing in for him has turned banality into an Art form.  Blathering on about her "half wower" whatever that is.  Steve Wright keeps on about "Serious Jockin"  Whats that? Is he talking about riding horses?

The use of the English language has been abandoned by the BBC.  Radio 2  was a replacement for the light programme. Radio 1 was the intended programme for the person who required none stop pop music and slight madness but Radio 2 seems to want to outdo Radio !.

Have now moved over  in the morning to Heart FM which does mix music up fairly well.  Classic FM is fine but you can get too much of its more limited music score.

I just wish that Radio 2 could be a little more sane. Ken Bruce is good!

 .... - thankfully I can get 6 music and ... and Maconey  ...

Ah! A 'Pie Eater' ...... I like Stuart Maconie too, comes across as very clever

Write your comments here...Molly, have you read any of his travelogues about life in Britai?:. Well written with an excellent sense of humour. If you haven't then I would seek them out.

I do try & read ...... but never have managed to be much of a reader, but I'll try. He comes across well on both the radio & telly

I love Radio 2, apart from Ken Bruce. I cannot stand him, or Pop Master. Makes me cringe every time. Vanessa standing in for Jeremy Vine is unbearable too. Her sing-songy tone with things like 'And here we have Veronica, whose son was kidnapped by paedophiles and murdered in a skip. Poor you Veronica! How are you? What a dreadful story!' is just awful.

So you think Radio 2 is dumbing down?

I've just been watching Tipping Point on ITV - to win £15000 viewers have to answer this question -

"Which of the following is a play by William Shakespeare -

A: Tom & Jerry

B: Laurel & Hardy

C: Romeo & Juliet"

Seems to me there's dumbing down and then there's just plain insulting! Sad

I'm with Moulesy on the subject of dumbing down. Both the BBC and ITV are aiming their programme output at the lowest common denominator.

If the trend continues, programmes like the Jeremy Kyle show will soon become the most highbrow of the lot.

It's about time the BBC gave something back for all the millions of pounds they rob from the British public due to the license fee.

Give us programmes which allow those of us with some intelligence to be challenged and entertained.

I was reading through this thread from the start and did not recognise any of the names mentioned until I got to "William Shakespeare".  This may be because I found a long time ago a feature of these new fangled car radios.  One can tune to a local station that gives good traffic information, ensure that "TA" appears on the display, and then play one's own choice of CDs and not have to listen to the radio stations choice of presenter, music or advertising content.  The CD is interupted with any traffic news.

Sarah Cox is back with her half wower!  So finally gave up and have retuned Clock radio and others in the house away from radio 2.

Most people on this thread seem over 60, sounds just like my parents when I was 18.

Looking at tonights listing for BBC channels I can see 12 programmes which would suit people of intelligence and want to be challenged and entertained, Tuesday has 7, I  would have trouble finding the time to watch them al,l so how much culture do you want?
