If my granny can turn in her grave, or so my mum alleged, then surely a snail can rotate (turn) in its shell? I.e. not laterally - head to tail - but across its diameter

Hmmm, If you poke a pin into a " Winkle" (snail like creature) does it retreat into it's shell also,or do you twist and pull it out front to back,or back to front ? ? ? .
