Night halt for Bilbao Ferry

Hi All,

Does anyone have any suggestions about where to stay the night before the ferry to Portsmouth from Bilbao ? Previously we have stayed at Camping Navarrete in Navarrete but this has deteriorated this year. I believe De Haro is ok in Haro but do they have a minimum stay policy in September ? In the past we have stayed at Camping Ibaya in Vitoria.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks

Brian

Hi,

We've stayed a few times the night before the crossing at the docks. In October 2021 we arrived in convoy with the camper and the RV at lunchtime and we were waved in to the waiting area for loading. We went out into town for dinner and security happily let us back in at 8pm. There were at least 60 vehicles there for the night. We had a few beers with a couple of Portugese lorry drivers and saw others having a bit of a get together, all very civilised.

That’s certainly how overnights in the security area beyond the check ins at Bilbao port took place when ferry departures from there were early the next morning.

But now that departures are in the afternoon there have been reports that check ins to that security area do not start until 0930 on the day of departure. Members have said that there is still plenty of overnight parking, but it is in an open public parking area, not in the secured Brittany Ferries compound.

Better check with the ferry company.to see what current arrangements are.

For those with motorhomes there is the Aire at Kobetamendi operated by the Bilbao youth hostel which is very popular and so it is best to reserve in advance.  80 places at 17 euros per night, electricity extra. Details and photos on line.

We’ve stayed at the Haro campsite many times, never needed to book and no problem with just a one night stop. There are plenty of hedged, hardstanding pitches, and cheaper options on the field.
Haro is a nice town, plenty of tapas bars and a convenient Mercadona for cheapo wine to bring home. And an easy drive to the Bilbao port.
Have a good trip.

🙂

We have used Camping Fuentes Blancas in Burgos the night before sailing from Bilbao and Santander. Its an easy 120 mainly motorway miles around 2 hours.
