Motorway Gantry Warning

We are all well aware that many Motorway Gantries have lane Speed Cameras located on the rear of them for obvious reasons. Recently (so I’m told) they have started to upgrade these cameras so that when a lane is closed and the Red Cross (lane closed) is showing the cameras turn into a form of Traffic Light Camera. Firstly, you would see the White Arrow indicating that you need to move into the next lane, this could be the lane(s) to your left or the lane(s) to your right for example. You may see this repeated on the next gantry or so before you approach the gantry displaying the lane Red Cross. I strongly advise you not to pass under said gantry as the lane is officially closed from this point forward.

Was extremely sceptical about Variable Speed Limits when it was first introduced, but found the traffic flow on the M25 at the Heathrow end improved immeasurably. Latterly on the M62 however, have regularly seen lower speed limits signalled but found no reason as I progressed onwards. Mind you, with a caravan hanging on the back, in general, overall journey times don't seem to be much affected given equality of time of day.

not a keen supporter of them either we were driving home on the M20 a few weeks back when I saw that the battery door had come undone pulled over on hard shoulder sorted on a smart motorway I could see a problem get to next refuge area some one else in it another mile to drive hoping battery stay's in place malc

I don't mind the variable speed limits, but I do get concerned about 'lane control'.

To be told you can use the 'hard shoulder'as a lane one minute and then being told only use hard shoulder for the next junction can be a bit of a nightmare.  It sometimes happens junction after junction.  The result is, you are either continually changing lanes, or you just 'don't bother using the hardshoulder' lane at all.  It can lead to a lot of cars continually changing lanes.  Not the safest idea IMHO.

Not on the motorway but there is a gantry just outside Oban which says "caution Motorbikes in your mirrors" have carried out extensive searches, and no, I can't find any.wink
