Memories

A few days ago there was the very sad sight of the last of our Type 42 frigates being towed out of Portsmouth harbour on her way to be scrapped in Turkey.  She looked sad, neglected and rusty and was a sad reflection on on a type that probably saw out the Royal Navy as many of us remember it.

Later this month Avro Vulcan XH558 will give her last display and land never to fly again. But at least she will be preserved on a Museam somewhere so that our grandchildren can see what great engineers we once were.

But so many of our iconic ships and aircraft have been scrapped at such an indecent rate over the past few years that in many cases the last ones were torn apart before anyone realised that they were indeed the last ones!

I would love to see a Shakleton in all its contra rotating props era. And the Fairy Gannet.  

Someone cut up the last Stirling and the last Halifax.

Our Leander class frigates all went the same way and the T Class subs.  Other Countries seem to have had a better sense of History in this respect.
