Driving fine and points on my license

Hi All

i have asked and phone several people including DVLA and the contact number of this site who said post the question on here to see if any of you could help, so here goes and thanks.

So last year while driving in Italy I was caught going though a red light, I have received a fine and now they have said they what to issue me with 6 points on my license.

So my questions are 

a) do I pay the fine, which I have no problem with

b) can they put the point on my license
