We paid .977 a litre yesterday at Tesco here in MK. I am still surprised that diesel is cheaper than petrol!
You can't really compare different countries as they all have different tax rates. In some countries the fuel is cheaper because they toll their motorways.

David, I am surprised that you are surprised that Diesel is cheaper than Petrol. It always used to be! It is cheaper to refine and that was always reflected in its price, until the time some years ago that the Govt raised its duty to equal that of petrol. Then the greedy fuel companies increased their mark up on diesel in order to keep their petrol price down.
Today greater knowledge by the general public makes that more difficult so both fuels are treated equally by the supplier.
Diesel is still far too expensive in this country when compared with the rest of Europe.

I was meaning in the context of recent prices where diesel has only recently fallen below the price of petrol. Whilst the duty is the same for both the wholesale price price of diesel is about 4p a litre more than petrol up until quite recently and that was generally the margin of difference in forecourt prices. Whilst diesel might be cheaper to produce I don't think they get as much out of a barrel of oil as they do petrol. Also the growth in diesel cars in the past twenty years across Europe lead to a shortage of refining capacity which would have affected the price. All countries have their own view of tax on fuel and I am not sure it makes sense to compare. Any reduction in fuel duty could only be compensated for by either raising other taxes or putting tolls on motorways. Do we want that?
