Air pollution in Carlisle

Just read this headline on Google news and couldn't think what the cause might be. Too much hot air coming out of the civic centre? The delicious smell of baking ginger nuts coming from McVities factory? No, apparently an air pollution monitor on the A7 was reading higher than the EU recommended level. If this had been France they would have shrugged and turned the monitor off but in Carlisle the local council came up with two proposals. Congestion charges and park and ride. How is that going to work with the local farmers getting their livestock to the mart? Do you park the tractor up and proceed like the drovers of old or do you get a Prius to tow the cattle trailer?

We have the opposite solution here in Tunbridge Wells, DO NOTHING and hope the problem will go away. You want a bypass? HA HA HA!

Congestion? we will slap a parking ticket on you if your wheels stop turning!

We have a solution in Northumberland.

Locally, it's called "fresh air"

Write your comments here...That works for most of the time  when you are getting the air we have finished with but when you get the rare South Easterly you are in real trouble.

Should have fresh air in North Devon but a local village, Braunton, has regular air pollution, due to traffic always queuing to get through the village. Usually caravans in the jams as well.

There is almost always a smell in the air when passing Carlisle on the M6 - reminiscent of an old-fashioned gas works.
