Wine!

I know there are several wine lovers on here, so I thought it might be a good idea to have a place to discuss and share each others favourite tipple.

A wine I have recently taken to is Barefoot Merlot.  A Californian wine, full bodied wine with a blueberry and plumb flavour.  Really worth a try.  We get it from the Co-op at a little less than £7 a bottle.

Hi DSB,

Not if you want any decent wine!     I know each and everyone has different tastes and pockets and that is evident from this string.   But if you want decent wine and want to improve the quality of wine you drink, keep away from these warehouse places and small supermarches.   Some of the bigger Carrefoure SM’s have some reasonable wines, but at a price.  SM’s always get the rubbish at a cheap price then make a good profit, but it is not the best wine.    Most decent wine producers don’t let much of their good wine leave the country of origin!

Try and source your wine locally wherever you are touring, there is always somewhere to get good wine, just ask the locals.   We are in Spain at the moment and know a Belgium guy on the site we are in and he sources fantastic wines at very reasonable prices.   We have a garage full of great wines.    We may even need to top up before we leave as we are enjoying them so much.    But you will never see these wines in a supermarket, anywhere.

Our Belgie friend and his wife are taking us to a nice restaurant in  Benicarlo tomorrow, it’s Raul Resino’s, a bit special, so let’s see what we get to eat and what wine?   Oh, and it’s a special menu including the “in season” artichokes, or Alcachofa.    Will let you know how it goes.

Popped into Lidl at Stamford yesterday and they had different varieties  of Blue Heron wines on offer. Came away with a couple of Cinsault, a spicey red, at half price....and it certainly tastes very pleasant.

Just for once I can recommend something, we've been hanging on to a 2014 half bottle present of Jurancon, Petit Manseng but we had it with our pudding tonight. A sherry glass was just right. Not usually keen on anything sweet but this had a nice tang. 🍸

Sainsbury's have their "buy 6, get 25% off" at the moment, so with judicious saving of nectar points, I managed to get 12 bottles for ...er ... 18p yesterday. 6 Silver Loki Sauvignon Blanc and 6 Barefoot Malbec. Enough to keep us going till Easter! embarassed

Do you only buy wine when you need it?

You should always have some in hand "just in case"!

I have to confess we have quite a lot in hand - to cover all eventualities (from "it's a nice evening, let's sit outside with a bottle of wine" to "It's been an awful day, let's open a bottle of wine" and everything inbetween.

P.S. - some good offers here, if like us prefer to buy English wine -

We'll soon be doing a tour of our local vineyard, Wraxall, it's on the edge of the Mendips, south of Shepton Mallet just off the Fosseway. Maybe the Romans tried it there first?! It will be interesting to see what they are producing and try a few samples. smile

I am sure I could have forced myself but we tend to use boxes of wine as Margaret usually only has one glass of wine which usually means I end up finishing the rest of the bottle!!! I have probably got several dozen bottles of wine in the cupboard so enough to be going on with!
