To those of you who like me enjoy a really good and factually fairly accurate war film. I cannot recommend more highly the film "Battle of the River Plate".

The film to be shown at 10.50am Thursday 12th March on More4 was made in the late 50's using Royal Naval Cruisers very similar to Exeter, Ajax and Achilles who took part in the real battle off Montevidao in November 1939.

The film was shot featuring a number of major British stars of the day Camera work was incredible when you consider the cameras etc available then.

For me the outstanding sight was of a British Cruiser depicting "Exeter" working herself up to full speed & flying Battle ensigns.  A sight which could not be repeated today I suspect.

Yes I know TW will again remark on me being a silly old buffer harking back to the old days.  but at least then we had a Royal Navy capable of defending our interests.
