That’s a nice end to a career. He will have seen all sorts of changes down those decades.

There was another nice story about a Virgin Airlines pilot on the news a couple of days ago. He was firstly furloughed, went to work in a jam making company, packing and out on the road delivering. He was actually made redundant, but had his second job. Then he got a call and now has his old job back with Virgin Airlines, flew one of the first USA bound flights out of Manchester on Monday. A good end to his tale thankfully.

My daughter  was on a train to Euston yesterday when the passengers were informed the driver was retiring  that day after 42 years. At Euston his colleagues and some passengers  did a "for he's a jolly good fellow "accompanied  by a trombone followed by lots of thanks from passengers.

Glad to see someone appreciated.....

I spent 44 years on London Transport, 20 on the buses & 24 on the trains, with 10 as an instructor, on my last day wasn't even a local manager on hand to say thanks/goodbye..... not that I expected anything different but would've been nice to be surprised surprised

Even at my 40 year service award there wasn't a manager there from my depot, just someone I never knew who had to ask my wife about me for something to say foot-in-mouth

Been there myself.I had to go in on a Saturday morning and assist with the dismantling of my office and its systems  for its transfer to the privatized outfit that were taking over. Got no going away presentation  but that was understandable since I had outlasted almost the entire workforce of British Coal and out of a quarter of a million I was the 38th still on the books, quite proud of thatwink
